Staff Software Engineer, PEO Growth
Gusto · San Francisco, CA - Hybrid
About this role
**Staff Software Engineer — PEO Growth (Gusto)** **About Gusto** Gusto’s mission is to grow the small business economy. They handle payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR—so owners can focus on their craft and customers. Teams are based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, supporting 500,000+ small businesses nationwide. **About the Role** Gusto is building a PEO (Professional Employer Organization) where Gusto becomes a co-employer for small businesses—taking on payroll, benefits, workers’ compensation, and HR compliance. As a **Staff Engineer on PEO Growth**, you’ll own the journey from how a business discovers the PEO to getting fully set up. **What you’ll do (day-to-day)** - Own the **PEO onboarding experience end to end**—from learning about the PEO to committing and getting set up—and be accountable for customer completion. - Set **technical direction**: turn ambiguous product bets into designs, sequencing, and durable abstractions. - Build in a **regulated domain** where quality and accuracy are critical. - Partner across app teams to integrate domains into one coherent journey; negotiate seams when ownership is unclear. - Use **AI as a normal part of your workflow** (coding agents, review, debugging, codebase exploration) and help add AI-assisted guidance to onboarding. - **Instrument the funnel** and make decisions from data: define success, measure it, and run experiments. - Raise the **engineering bar** (reviews, testing strategy, observability, and build-vs-move-fast judgment). **What we’re looking for** - **8+ years** of professional software engineering experience, including owning customer-facing product surfaces in a large production codebase. - Strong **full-stack** range (mature server-side + modern component-based frontend). **Ruby on Rails** and **React/TypeScript** are desirable. - Demonstrated **AI fluency**: you use AI tooling in day-to-day engineering, can explain where it helps/doesn’t, and keep up as tools evolve. - **High ownership in ambiguity**: shape fuzzy needs into buildable work and ship without perfect specs. - Strong **collaboration and influence** across teams, with a track record of leveling up others. - **Bonus:** experience in growth/funnels/conversion, plan & product configuration, or systems that turn purchase decisions into provisioned customers. - Bachelor’s degree in CS (or related) or equivalent practical experience. **Compensation & Location** - Target cash compensation: **$163,000–$204,000** (Denver & most remote) and **$197,000–$247,000** (San Francisco & New York). Stock equity is additional. - Final offers depend on multiple factors, including experience and expertise. **Work location expectations** - Offices in **Denver, San Francisco, and New York City**. Hybrid employees are expected to work from the office about **2–3 days/week** (or more depending on role). - When approved to work outside a Gusto office, a **secure, reliable, consistent internet connection** is required. **Equal Opportunity** Gusto is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans.
