**Staff Software Engineer, Backend — Reverse ETL (Fivetran/dbt Labs)** **About Fivetran** Fivetran’s mission is to make access to data as simple and reliable as electricity. Fivetran and dbt Labs are bringing together two industry-leading companies to help organizations unlock the full value of their data, from data movement to transformation and trusted analytics/AI. **About the Role** Join the Reverse ETL product engineering team. Formerly Census, acquired in May 2025, you’ll help integrate data activation capabilities directly into the Fivetran dashboard across authentication, billing, data models, UI, and more. This is a full-time role based in **Toronto or Oakland** with a **hybrid** work model. --- **Technologies You’ll Use** - Expertise in at least one interpreted language (e.g., **Python**, **Ruby on Rails**) - Hands-on experience with at least one compiled language (e.g., **C++**, **Kotlin**, **Scala**, **Go**, **Java**) - Solid understanding of **relational databases** (Snowflake experience is a plus) - Proven system integration experience (API consumption/development; infra management is a plus) - Familiarity with **GCP, AWS, or Azure** - Experience being **on-call** --- **What You’ll Do** - Contribute across the tech stack: **Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, Vue, AWS** - Fill gaps in product/design specs and prototype to validate ideas before building - Partner with product, leaders, and customers to design and develop features for data activation - Mentor early-career engineers, lead thoughtful code reviews, and provide project-level leadership across teams/time zones - Lead major projects—from research spikes to design docs to implementation and rollout --- **Skills We’re Looking For** - Build end-to-end: engineers build, deploy, and maintain their code - Strong with data, backend systems, APIs, and UI components - Customer-focused with an eye for delightful product and developer experiences - Scrappy optimism and a bias toward action - Thrives in ambiguity and works directly with customers to build trust and impact - Able to collaborate with a distributed team across North America (online, synchronous/asynchronous) - Can work in-person in **Toronto/Oakland 2 days/week** --- **Location & Work Style** - **Toronto or Oakland (Hybrid)** - **2 days/week in office** **Perks and Benefits (Highlights)** - **100% employer-paid medical insurance** - Generous paid time away (vacation/sick/holidays; inclusive parental leave; Global Week of Rest; volunteer days) - **RSU stock grants** - Professional development and training opportunities - Company virtual happy hours and free food *Compensation range shown for Oakland: **$196,033 – $245,041.50 USD** (subject to role/level/location and may change).*
