## Sr Engineering Manager – API & Auth Platform ### About Betterment Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company offering investing, savings, retirement solutions, and financial wellness solutions (including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses). We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (four days/week in-office, with no required office days during the summer and winter holidays). ### About the Role The API & Auth Platform team enables product teams across Betterment to build and operate APIs quickly, enjoyably, and securely. As **Sr Engineering Manager**, you’ll lead a team of senior/staff engineers stewarding: - Shared **GraphQL API frameworks** - **Authentication** and **access control** systems - An **internal tooling platform** You’ll partner with engineering and product leadership to drive the technical direction of the GraphQL API frameworks powering Betterment’s customer-facing web and mobile applications. You’ll also collaborate with operations, customer support, and compliance to ensure internal APIs meet the rigor customers and regulators expect. As AI tooling reshapes how we build and operate systems, you’ll influence how Betterment’s APIs support **AI agents and tooling safely** in a regulated financial services environment. **Location:** NYC office (hybrid) **Base Salary Range (NYC):** $200,000 – $230,000 This role may also be eligible for a company incentive bonus. ### A Day in the Life - Lead and grow a team of senior/staff engineers building the API, authentication, and internal tooling platform used across Betterment. - Drive technical strategy for GraphQL API frameworks powering customer-facing and internal apps, including AI-native/agentic tooling workflows. - Ensure authentication and authorization systems stay current with industry best practices. - Sequence your roadmap to balance reliability, security, developer experience, and platform capabilities (e.g., secure, first-party MCP access to Betterment APIs). - Work closely with product teams to develop broad Betterment domain expertise. - Maintain and communicate standards that keep shared systems healthy—making the “why” clear. - Partner with IT and security on platform governance so engineering can build confidently and operations can operate with assurance as AI identity/access patterns evolve. - Partner with department leaders on a permission model that fits evolving workflows and incorporates new AI tooling (including MCP servers and connectors). - Build efficient, blameless incident response and invest in observability for both developers and internal tool users. - Translate Betterment’s accountability culture into platform operating procedures (clear ownership, security, iteration). ### What We’re Looking For - Experience managing senior/staff ICs; ability to coach through complex technical challenges while maintaining momentum. Capable of meaningful architectural direction, code review, and hands-on work. - Proven track record leading a team that owns a shared platform used by engineering, operations, and customer support. Experience leading cross-team projects affecting software systems, tooling, and workflows. - Experience managing shared API platforms—ideally GraphQL—plus strong understanding of frameworks, conventions, and developer tooling. - Hands-on experience with modern authentication/authorization patterns (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, passkeys), including adoption, long-term support, and sec
