**Sr. Software Engineer – API & Auth Platform** **About Betterment** Betterment is a technology-driven financial services company offering investing, savings, retirement solutions, and financial wellness for retail investors, investment advisors, and small/medium-sized businesses. We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (four days/week in-office; no required office days during the summer and winter holidays). **About the Role** The API & Auth Platform team enables product teams across Betterment to build and operate APIs quickly, enjoyably, and securely. As a Sr Software Engineer, you’ll work with senior/staff engineers on shared GraphQL API frameworks, authentication and access control systems, and internal tooling. You’ll help build core GraphQL API framework components for customer-facing web and mobile applications, and partner with operations, customer support, and compliance to ensure internal APIs meet the rigor customers and regulators expect. As AI tooling reshapes how we build and operate systems, you’ll influence how Betterment’s APIs support AI agents and tooling safely in a regulated financial services environment. **Hybrid / Location** Based out of our NYC office. **Compensation (Base Salary Range)** - New York City: **$170,000 – $195,000** This role may also be eligible for a company incentive bonus. **A Day in the Life** - Work with a team of senior/staff engineers building the API, authentication, and internal tooling foundation used across Betterment. - Deliver GraphQL API frameworks for customer-facing and internal apps, including agentic tooling for AI-native API development workflows. - Contribute to authentication and authorization systems, keeping them current with industry best practices. - Build platform capabilities such as secure, first-party MCP access to Betterment APIs—plus the reliability, security, and developer experience work that makes them trustworthy. - Embed with product teams that build on your platform; develop broad Betterment domain expertise. - Help make standards that keep shared systems healthy visible and easy to meet, including communicating the “why.” - Participate in efficient, blameless incident response; invest in observability for both developers and internal tool users. - Mentor junior engineers and help accelerate their growth. **What We’re Looking For** - Experience working in sensitive auth systems alongside senior/staff ICs to shape technical direction. - Experience building on or contributing to a shared API platform (ideally GraphQL), with an appreciation for frameworks, conventions, and developer tooling. - Modern authentication/authorization experience (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, passkeys), including security testing and long-term support/adoption. - Production operations experience for systems other teams depend on, with a focus on observability, testing, and safe rollouts. - Comfort with the evolving AI landscape—using AI tooling in your workflow and thinking clearly about safe API access for AI agents. - Fullstack experience including GraphQL and one or more server-side languages (Ruby, Java, TypeScript, C#, Python, etc.). - Ability to collaborate across disciplines and team boundaries. - Open-mindedness when balancing speed, customer quality, and regulatory requirements. **Join a Team Built on Core Values** - **We change lives** - **We set audacious goals** - **We value all perspectives** - **We simplify financial services** **Total Well-being & Ben
