**Software Engineer, Application Platform — Airbnb** ## The Difference You Will Make The Application Platform team builds application-level building blocks that let every engineer and AI agent at Airbnb ship product behavior safely and quickly—without assembling or operating the underlying infrastructure. In this role, you’ll work on critical services such as **dynamic configuration**, **distributed counting**, **asynchronous job processing systems**, **application gateways**, and more. Success comes from understanding Airbnb’s service-oriented architecture, designing reliable and efficient solutions (often spanning multiple systems), and collaborating effectively across teams. ## A Typical Day You’ll build and maintain **high-scale, production-facing distributed systems** that are in the critical path of user requests. Because these systems support many critical services, downtime can impact the Airbnb platform significantly. You’ll also partner with product and infrastructure engineering teams to deliver new features and evolve systems as the business grows. ### Responsibilities - **Design and implement distributed systems**: develop significant parts of production services, implement core features with teammates, create rollout/testing plans, and participate in on-call. - **Maintain and debug existing systems**: fix bugs, improve test coverage, enhance performance, contribute to production excellence, add features, perform code reviews, and improve observability (dashboards). - **Provide technical support**: answer questions, debug code, troubleshoot issues, and help stakeholders design, implement, and ship features. - **Stay current with emerging trends and technologies**: research and identify technologies—especially in **AI**—to move toward future system states. - **Collaborate broadly across Airbnb**: work with engineers on company-wide initiatives and partner with external teams to ensure team success supports the broader platform and community. ## Your Expertise - **Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree** in CS (or equivalent experience) - **3+ years** of industry experience - Experience with **distributed systems** and evaluating trade-offs - Proficiency in **Java**, **microservices**, **observability systems**, and debugging **distributed + multi-threaded** systems - **AI-first engineering mindset**: use LLM-powered agents to generate/iterate on code while focusing on problem-solving, system design, and quality oversight - Strong **technical communication** (design docs, design reviews, post-mortems) - Proactive collaboration through **code reviews** and architecture discussions - Motivation to contribute to a positive team culture and belonging - Excitement to join an impactful infrastructure team ## Inclusion & Belonging Airbnb is committed to working with a broad talent pool and encourages all qualified individuals to apply.
