Learn more: http://starburst.ai --- **About the role** Starburst is seeking strong **Java** engineers to join the **Control Plane** team. This role focuses on converging the control planes of two flagship deployment models—**Starburst Enterprise Platform (SEP)** (self-managed) and **Starburst Galaxy** (fully managed)—into a single unified platform. You’ll design and build backend services and cloud infrastructure that run in both worlds: - **Multi-tenant SaaS** at global scale - **Customer-operated on-premise and air-gapped deployments** --- **What you’ll do (Senior Software Engineer, Control Plane)** - Design, develop, and maintain **control plane services** shared by **Starburst Enterprise**, **Starburst Galaxy**, and **Trino** - Drive the **Unified Control Plane**: take capabilities like access control, multi-cluster management, routing, catalog management, and observability and deliver a single implementation for both SaaS and self-managed deployments - Own **reliability, scalability, and efficiency** (performance/$) including provisioning & upgrading APIs, cluster lifecycle management, and operational tooling - Build for **two distinct operating models** simultaneously (SaaS-operated service vs. customer-deployed software across AWS/Azure/GCP and on-prem) - Provide considerate, timely reviews of peers’ PRs and design proposals - Improve engineering processes, tests, and systems so codebase and team productivity scale together - Collaborate globally in a fast-paced environment (with an emphasis on focused work and clear written communication) - Provide exceptional customer support for internal and external customers - Periodically support the **React + TypeScript Portal UI** (frontend knowledge helpful, not required) --- **What we’re looking for** - Experience developing **distributed systems** - Extensive **Java** software development experience - Cloud infrastructure architecture & orchestration experience across at least one major cloud provider - Experience building/operating backend services others depend on (APIs, control loops, lifecycle management) - Hands-on adoption of **AI coding tools/agents** (ship real code + good judgment on where they help) - Demonstrated software engineering & design best practices - Ability to build maintainable, performant, high-quality software in a globally distributed team - Intrinsic motivation to improve engineering craftsmanship - Comfort with significant autonomy and ownership - Curiosity to connect the dots across teams (goal: one implementation replacing two) - Demonstrated **Ownership, Grit, and Bias for Action** (core Starburst values) --- **Location** - **Warsaw – Remote, Poland** --- **Pay Range (U.S. locations)** - **$185,000 – $215,000 USD** --- **Build your career at Starburst** Starburst supports All-Stars with competitive Total Rewards (including equity/ISOs and benefits), flexible time off, and an inclusive culture.
