Embedded Software Engineer
Nuro · Mountain View, California (HQ)
About this role
**Embedded Software Engineer** **Who We Are** Nuro believes self-driving vehicles are the most immediate and profound opportunity for AI to drive positive change in the physical world. We’re building a universal autonomy platform—self-driving for all roads and all rides. Founded in 2016, Nuro is a physical AI company developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology for a wide range of vehicles, use cases, and markets. Powered by the Nuro Driver™, our universal autonomy platform enables the global mobility ecosystem to deploy autonomy at scale. **About the Role** Nuro operates real self-driving vehicles on public roads today—not a research platform, not ADAS. The Embedded Software Engineering team builds safety-critical embedded controller software that connects the Nuro Driver™ to the vehicle, including: - Steering, braking, and propulsion command/control - Power distribution and monitoring - Vehicle motion monitoring - Safe-state behavior when something goes wrong As an Embedded Software Engineer, you’ll work across the full stack of multicore automotive microcontrollers—from RTOS, drivers, and scheduling through middleware and application components that communicate with the vehicle. You’ll help extend the stack as hardware evolves, and bring the Nuro Driver™ up on new vehicle platforms alongside OEM and supplier engineers. We’re hiring across levels, from engineers with a couple years of embedded experience to those who’ve shipped a production automotive launch. **About the Work** - Design, implement, and test embedded C software for safety-critical multicore automotive microcontrollers (RTOS, device drivers, scheduling, bootloader, middleware messaging/protection, and application components like actuator interface, body controls, power management, and fault management) - Integrate the Nuro Driver™ with new vehicle platforms: define/implement CAN and Ethernet interfaces with OEM ECUs, adapt actuator and body-control interfaces, and validate on bench and in vehicle - Participate in hands-on device and vehicle bring-up, prototyping, and debugging across multiple vehicle platforms (from first power-on to autonomous driving) - Build and maintain verification infrastructure (unit tests, hardware-in-the-loop benches, and vehicle test procedures) - Work within an ISO 26262 development process with full traceability from system safety requirements to software requirements, implementation, and verification - Collaborate daily with systems, safety, hardware, controls, and autonomy engineers, plus OEM and supplier partners, from definition through verification **About You** - B.S. or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field - 2+ years of industry experience developing embedded software in C, including work on a real-time operating system - Strong computer science fundamentals (data structures, concurrency, algorithm design) - Working knowledge of microcontroller internals/peripherals, with depth in at least one area: device driver development, CAN or automotive Ethernet, bootloaders/software update, embedded security, or vehicle-level integration and test - Strong problem-solving/debugging skills and clear written/spoken communication; proven ability to work well across engineering disciplines - Comfortable at the bench with debug probes, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and CAN tools **Bonus Points** - 3+ years of embedded development in automotive or autonomous vehicles, inclu
