**2027 Summer Intern, MS/PhD, Machine Learning Engineer** **About Waymo** Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company building the Waymo Driver—the world's most experienced driver. We've provided over 10 million rider-only trips and autonomously driven over 100 million miles on public roads. **The Role** Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. You'll work on perception, decision-making, and deep learning challenges while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. **What You'll Do** • Train and fine-tune large multi-task transformers over driving-log sequences in JAX/Flax on TPUs • Design and run rigorous offline and end-to-end evaluations (PR-AUC, calibration quality, metric sensitivity) • Land production-quality code in shared codebases and communicate results through design docs and presentations **Required** • Currently enrolled in MS or PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field • Hands-on experience training/evaluating deep learning models (JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow) • Strong C++/Python skills with solid ML fundamentals (precision/recall, class imbalance, experiment design) **Preferred** • Published papers at top-tier AI/ML conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, KDD, CVPR, etc.) • Experience with transformers, multi-task learning, transfer learning, or parameter-efficient fine-tuning • JAX/Flax, distributed training on TPUs/GPUs, large-scale data processing • Autonomous driving, robotics, or simulation experience **Compensation & Benefits** • MS: $70/hour | PhD: $85/hour • Medical, dental, vision insurance • Housing/relocation bonus (if applicable) • Free meals, Google shuttles, onsite gym • Intern events and networking **Note:** Hybrid onsite position.
