## Zscaler — Principal Software Development Engineer (Control-Plane) ### About the role Zscaler (NASDAQ: ZS) accelerates digital transformation with its Zero Trust Exchange™ platform, protecting customers from cyberattacks and data loss by securely connecting users, devices, and applications anywhere. We’re seeking a **Principal Software Development Engineer (Control-Plane)** to join our Engineering team. This is a **hybrid** role in **Santa Clara, CA** (**minimum 3 days/week**), reporting to the **Director, Software Development Engineering**. You’ll help expand our existing control path by driving new features and enhanced functionality, and play a pivotal role in evolving our architecture for a growing user base. ### What you’ll do (Role Expectations) - Define software design specifications and implement **bug-free code** using **test-driven methodology** and modern **AI-based coding tools** - Design, develop, and optimize the system (including **networking and security features**) to support **high-performance applications**, with unit testing and automation to ensure quality - Apply strong software design principles and deep troubleshooting expertise to deliver **scalable, resilient, high-impact** improvements to Zscaler’s Zero Trust Security Services - Collaborate with Engineering Architects, Product Managers, Customers, and Solution Architects to understand use cases, review PRDs, and resolve system-related issues - **Coach and mentor** junior team members and ensure the highest level of quality deliverables ### Who you are (Success Profile) - Thrive in ambiguity and build the path as you go - Act like an owner with integrity and a bias for action - Enjoy solving hard problems and delivering meaningful impact - High-trust collaborator who embraces a challenge culture and values clear, respectful feedback - Growth-minded learner who continuously develops and seeks feedback ### What we’re looking for (Minimum Qualifications) - **12+ years** designing and building large-scale, highly reliable, scalable software systems (preferably **Python and/or Go**) - Strong hands-on experience with **public cloud infrastructure** across **AWS, GCP, and Azure** - Deep understanding of cloud networking concepts/services, including: **Transit Gateway, Internet Gateway, NAT Gateway, NACLs, security groups, GWLB, ILB, Route 53, Azure DNS** - Foundational knowledge of **AI/ML**, with experience applying, securing, or positioning AI-driven solutions to improve outcomes - Strong software design, profiling, and verification skills, including optimizing systems for **scale and performance** ### What will make you stand out (Preferred Qualifications) - Experience designing/building **distributed systems** and **SaaS platforms**, delivering highly available, resilient, scalable services in production - Deep understanding of **firewalls**, network security principles, and core networking protocols; ability to troubleshoot complex traffic flows and enforce secure connectivity - Hands-on familiarity architecting/building **Firewall-as-a-Service** on major cloud platforms (**AWS, GCP, Azure**), including cloud-native networking and security services ### Location & tags - **#LI-Hybrid #LI-KM9** ### Base pay range (US) - **$185,500 — $265,000 USD** (base salary; excludes commission/bonus/equity if applicable + benefits) ### Benefits (highlights) - Various health plans - Time off plans (vacation/sick) - Parental leave options - Retirement options - Educati
