**Software Engineer II, Marketplace Optimization** **About the Role** Join Upstart's Marketplace Optimization team within Capital Marketplace Engineering. You'll design and build systems that power real-time marketplace decisioning, matching, offer selection, and monetization. This is a business-critical role where engineering decisions directly influence revenue, profitability, and borrower experience. **What You'll Do** • Design, build, and operate scalable backend systems for real-time marketplace decisioning • Build flexible platform capabilities enabling experimentation with allocation strategies and monetization • Develop reliable, observable services balancing availability, latency, correctness, and operational simplicity • Partner with Product, ML, Data Science, and Capital Markets teams on technical solutions • Make architectural decisions that simplify systems and reduce coupling across platforms • Use Generative AI tools thoughtfully throughout the development lifecycle **Required Qualifications** • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field (or equivalent) • 2+ years of software engineering experience • Experience designing and operating scalable backend/distributed systems in production • Production service development using modern backend programming languages • Experience building business-critical systems with testing, monitoring, and incident response • Strong focus on reliability, availability, observability, and correctness **Preferred Qualifications** • Marketplace, financial systems, recommendation engines, or experimentation platform experience • Low-latency, high-throughput distributed system design knowledge • ML/Data Science integration experience • Ruby, Rails, Python, or Kotlin experience • Ability to navigate ambiguous technical and business problems **Location & Travel** Remote (USA or Canada, except Quebec). Digital-first role with quarterly in-person onsites (1-2 times/quarter, 2-4 days). **Compensation** • US Remote: $142,000 – $196,600 USD • Canada Remote: $136,000 – $184,000 CAD • Includes bonus, equity, 401(k)/RRSP match, health coverage, paid leave, and more
