Embedded Software Engineer, Safety-Critical Systems
Bedrock Robotics · San Francisco, CA
About this role
## Embedded Software Engineer — Safety-Critical Systems ### About Bedrock At Bedrock, we’re moving AI out of the lab and into the real world—deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country to improve safety and accelerate critical infrastructure schedules. In just two years, we’ve raised $350M and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction. This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. ### The Role The **Onboard Infrastructure** team builds the software foundation Bedrock’s autonomous machines run on—the layer that enables Bedrock to scale across multiple machines, variations, models, and environments. You’ll help architect, build, and own major areas of our **embedded safety controller**, from **drivers and RTOS bring-up** through **applications and system integration**. This mixed-criticality controller is the main interface between Bedrock autonomy and the heavy machinery it controls. ### What You’ll Do - Build **safety-critical software** to control the base machine and monitor Bedrock system health, with **strict isolation** and **deterministic real-time execution**. - Develop across the embedded software stack: **drivers, RTOS, communication, middleware, and applications**. - Interface with and control a broad range of heavy machinery across machine types and manufacturers; design abstractions for flexibility and portability. - Extend the platform to embedded field devices (e.g., **power management, sensor cleaning, lighting**) so machines keep working in harsh conditions. ### Required Qualifications - Experience building and shipping embedded systems in **robotics, automotive, drones, or other safety-critical** contexts. - Strong embedded programming skills in **C++ or Rust**, plus fluency in **Python** for scripting and analysis. - Solid foundation for **resource-constrained** systems with **real-time** requirements. - Comfortable developing, automating, and debugging across the **hardware/software boundary**. - Track record of leading projects, driving design decisions, and collaborating across hardware, autonomy, and platform teams. ### Preferred Qualifications - Production or embedded experience with **Rust**. - Familiarity with automotive/industrial networking and protocols including **CAN, Ethernet, and J1939**. - Experience building software aligned with functional safety standards such as **ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or DO-178C**. ### Equal Opportunity & Accommodations Bedrock Robotics is an **Equal Opportunity Employer** and is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you need a **reasonable accommodation** during the application or interview process, let your recruiter know so we can support you.
