Research Engineer, Operations
Basis Research · New York Office
About this role
## About Basis Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals: - **Understand and build intelligence** (the mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explanation—plus software that implements them) - **Advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems** (expanding the scale, complexity, and breadth of what we can solve, and accelerating future progress) ## About the Role — Research Engineer (Operations) Research Engineers in Operations at Basis build the internal tooling, automation, and measurement systems that multiply researcher productivity and operational efficiency. You’ll create tools that: - Save hours of manual work - Automate proposal and CRM workflows - Provide analytics that inform strategic decisions as Basis scales This role is critical to Basis’s scaling strategy—helping transform operations from manual processes into automated systems that enable growth without diminishing returns. ## What You’ll Do - Build **researcher productivity tools** (experiment tracking, literature research automation, computational environment management, and integrations with existing research workflows) - Develop **GTM and business operations automation** (CRM systems, pipeline management, proposal generation, contract tracking, and customer communication workflows) - Create **analytics and measurement infrastructure** (research progress, operational metrics, resource utilization, and progress toward strategic objectives) - Automate operational processes for **recruiting**, **marketing**, and cross-functional workflows that currently require manual coordination - Build **internal APIs and integrations** (Notion, Linear, email, calendars, Slack) to eliminate manual data transfer - Implement **AI/LLM-powered tools** using language models, RAG, and agent orchestration - Translate research ideas into **correct, robust, scalable code**, including performance engineering and scaling research code - Contribute to Basis culture through technical excellence, continuous improvement, and enabling high-leverage work ## What We’re Looking For - Strong **programming and software engineering** skills, especially in **Julia, Python, C++,** and ML-family languages; ability to drive projects end-to-end - Comfort digesting research from **PL/ML venues** (e.g., PLDI, POPL, NeurIPS, ICML) and progressing with autonomy under uncertainty - Experience with **LLM-powered automation** (OpenAI API, Anthropic Claude, LangChain) for intelligent automation, workflow orchestration, and agent-based systems - Demonstrated ML engineering achievements, such as: - Implementing variants of newly published techniques from scratch - Building distributed training systems for large models - Building systems across the stack (from high-level APIs to close-to-the-metal code) - Deep understanding of research and operational workflows to identify high-impact automation opportunities - **User-centric design** for internal tools: seek feedback, iterate based on real usage, and measure success by adoption and time saved - Excitement about **force-multiplying impact** (tools may be internal, but they enable solving intractable problems at scale) ## Role Details - **Full-time** - **In-person policy:** in the office **four days a week**; be prepared to attend multi-day Basis-wide in-person events - **Location:** New York City - **Compensation:** Competitive salary ## Equal Opportunity & Priv
