About this role
**Research Engineer, Machine Learning** **About BASIS** BASIS is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals: (1) understand and build intelligence, and (2) advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems by expanding the scale, complexity, and breadth of what we can solve—and accelerating future progress. **About the Role** Research engineers at BASIS translate research ideas into correct, robust, scalable, high-quality code. You’ll work on rigorous, high-quality, robust science—tinkering, iterating, and exploring radically different ideas—while collaborating with others (internally and with external partners) on challenges larger than any one person could tackle alone. **Machine Learning Research Engineering Focus** Core areas include: - Probabilistic programming and statistical inference - Deep learning - Causal inference - Program synthesis and analysis - ML Ops and systems engineering These areas are developed in the context of building reasoning systems, so you may also work on topics such as programming language design and implementation, automatic differentiation, and SAT/SMT solvers. **What You’ll Do (Expectations / Responsibilities)** - Translate research ideas into correct, robust, scalable high-quality code - Engage in programming language design/implementation - Perform performance engineering and scaling of research code - Develop algorithms - Contribute to the culture and direction of BASIS - *(Optionally)* Publish and present findings in journals and conferences **What We’re Looking For** - Excellent programming and software engineering skills, especially in **Julia, Python, C++,** and ML-family languages - Proven ability to drive software projects from start to finish (e.g., open-source, technical reports, publications) - Comfort digesting research from PL and/or ML venues (e.g., **PLDI, POPL, NeurIPS, ICML**) - High autonomy and ability to progress under uncertainty - Enthusiasm for solving real-world problems with positive societal impact - Significant technical achievements in ML engineering, such as: - Implementing variants of newly published techniques from scratch - Building distributed training systems for large models - Building systems across the full programming stack (from high-level APIs to low-level code) **Nice to Have** - A **PhD (or equivalent experience)** in technical areas such as statistics, programming languages, machine learning, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, or mathematics **Role Details** - **Type:** Full-time (FT) - **Hours:** Some flexibility; expect to attend multi-day BASIS-wide in-person events - **Location:** In-person in **New York City** or **Boston** - **Compensation:** Competitive salary and bonuses **Non-Discrimination Notice** BASIS provides equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or genetics, and prohibits discrimination based on all protected characteristics. **Privacy Notice** By submitting your application, you grant BASIS permission to use your materials for hiring evaluation and recruitment-related research and development purposes.
