**ABOUT BASIS** Basis (https://www.basis.ai) is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals: - Understand and build intelligence (establish the mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explanation; and construct software that implements these principles) - Advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems (expand the scale/complexity/breadth of problems we can solve, and accelerate future problem-solving) **ABOUT THE ROLE** Research scientists lead Basis’ efforts to develop a deeper understanding of the conceptual, mathematical, and computational principles of intelligence. You’ll work on rigorous, high-quality, robust science—while also being willing to tinker, iterate, and explore radically different ideas. Basis is collaborative (internally and with external partners), and you’ll enjoy working with others on problems larger than any one person can tackle alone. **EXPECTATIONS** - Demonstrated ability to do high-quality scientific research (e.g., publications, technical reports, and/or software projects) - **Advantage:** PhD (or equivalent experience) in technical areas such as statistics, programming languages, machine learning, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, or mathematics - Excited about solving real-world problems with positive societal impact **RESPONSIBILITIES** - Develop and explore computational theories of intelligence (reasoning, learning, decision-making) - Collaborate closely with domain experts inside and especially outside Basis to solve scientific and societal problems - Distill insights into more general mathematical and computational theories - Develop and maintain open-source software - *(Optional)* Publish and present findings in journals and conferences - Contribute to the culture and direction of Basis **ROLE DETAILS** - **Type:** Full-time (FT/PT: full-time) - **Hours:** Flexible; prioritize in-person collaboration and be prepared to attend multi-day Basis-wide in-person events - **Location:** In-person in **New York City** or **Cambridge, MA** - **Compensation:** Competitive salary and bonuses **NON-DISCRIMINATION** Basis Research Institute provides equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or genetics, and prohibits discrimination based on all protected characteristics. **PRIVACY NOTICE** By submitting your application, you grant Basis permission to use your materials for hiring evaluation and recruitment-related research and development purposes.
