## About Basis Basis (https://www.basis.ai/) is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals: - **Understand and build intelligence** (reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explaining—plus software that embodies these principles) - **Advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems** by expanding the scale and accelerating future problem-solving ## About the Role — Software Engineer (LLM & Automation) We’re seeking Software Engineers to build **scalable systems that integrate large language models (LLMs)** into everyday operational workflows. You’ll design and deploy automated **“pipelines”** for tasks such as **recruiting, finance, and project management**, often powered by **GPT, Claude, or similar LLMs**. **Work arrangement:** flexible—hiring **contractors, part-time, or full-time**. ## Core Responsibilities - Architect and maintain **automation pipelines** combining internal tools with **GPT/Claude and other LLMs** - Integrate data across **third-party APIs** (e.g., **ATS platforms, Slack, Google**) into unified workflows - Use **structured generation** (e.g., **JSON schemas**, **function calling**) to improve robustness and correctness - Collaborate with **Ops and R&D** to identify high-impact automation opportunities - Write **production-grade code** with emphasis on modularity, reliability, and error handling - **Deploy, scale, and optimize** solutions in a secure, cloud-based environment - Document solutions for **technical and non-technical** audiences ## Qualifications & Attributes - **3+ years** production-level coding in **Julia and/or Python** (or equivalent) - Experience integrating LLMs using **structured prompts**, **scaffolding frameworks** (LangChain-like), or advanced generation approaches - Ability to handle **concurrency, scaling, and performance** in real deployments - Comfort with complex **API orchestration** (rate limits, OAuth, retries, etc.) - Strong collaboration/communication skills, especially gathering requirements from non-technical staff - Creative, flexible problem-solving with iterative/experimental development - Commitment to **data security best practices** (PII handling, encryption, secrets management) - Excitement to learn quickly and adapt to the evolving LLM/AI ecosystem ## Technical Skills (Preferred) - **Julia:** type-driven / multiple-dispatch approaches; performance tuning, HPC, or scientific computing workflows - **Python:** microservices with **FastAPI/Flask**; advanced concurrency (async, multiprocessing) - **LLM tools/frameworks:** familiarity with **LangChain**, open-source LLM clients, or custom integrations - **Cloud:** Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD, AWS/GCP/Azure deployment patterns - **Distributed systems & queues:** task queues (e.g., Celery, Sidekiq) or event-driven systems - **Databases:** schema/query design in **PostgreSQL** (or similar) - **Security & privacy:** OAuth flows, secrets management, encryption, role-based access controls ## Non-Discrimination Notice Basis Research Institute provides equal employment opportunities without regard to protected characteristics and prohibits discrimination. ## Privacy Notice By submitting your application, you grant Basis permission to use your materials for hiring evaluation and recruitment-related research and development purposes.
