**Postdoctoral Fellow (Open Call) — Basis** ## About the Fellowship Basis Postdoctoral Fellowships offer an immersive research environment for highly qualified researchers to deepen their expertise in **computational theories of intelligence**, including **reasoning, learning, and decision-making**. Fellows work closely with **Basis Research Scientists** and **partner Principal Investigators (PIs)** from academic institutions. ## About Basis Basis is a **nonprofit applied AI research organization** with two mutually reinforcing goals: - **Understand and build intelligence** (mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, and explanation; plus software that implements these principles) - **Advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems** (expanding the scale and breadth of solvable problems and accelerating future progress) ## How it Works - **Joint mentorship & funding** by Basis and partner PIs at academic institutions - Fellows split time between **Basis** and the **academic PI’s lab** (a jointly advised postdoctoral position) - **Two pathways**: - **Join an existing project** (partner PI roles; some have a single PI, others offer a curated shortlist) - **Open Call**: propose a **new research direction** and (optionally) suggest potential PI mentors ## Who We’re Looking For - A **PhD** in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, or related fields - A demonstrated track record via **publications, technical reports, or impactful software projects** ## Core Responsibilities - Conduct **independent and collaborative research** in Basis’s thematic areas (computational theories of intelligence) - **Publish and present** findings at leading conferences - Engage in **knowledge transfer** within Basis and with external partners (turn research into actionable insights/algorithms) - Provide **mentorship** to junior team members and contribute to Basis scientific discourse (seminars, workshops, collaborative projects) ## Role Details - **Full-time**; fixed duration of **1–2 years** - **In-person** in the **New York City and Boston** areas - **Competitive salary** - **Start date**: applications reviewed on a **rolling basis**; **immediate start possible** ## Application Components Please submit: - **Cover letter (max 2 pages)** including: - Brief description of your PhD research and past accomplishments - **At least three potential PI mentors outside of Basis** (and note any existing relationships or prior discussions) - **CV** - **Research proposal (max 3 pages, not including references)** outlining your planned research ## FAQ (Highlights) - **How is this different from a Basis Research Scientist role?** - Fellowship is **time-limited** (typically 1–2 years) - Fellows receive **co-mentorship** from academic PIs - Fellows are expected to **publish** their research - Similarities: expected to contribute to Basis core technology; Basis supports skill development; access to **annual research funds ($5,000)** - **After the fellowship**: Fellows may be offered a **full-time Research Scientist** role at Basis (contingent on performance and organizational needs) - **Do you need a collaborator PI?** You must suggest **three or more potential PIs** in the cover letter, but the eventual collaborator is **not required** to come from that list. ## Non-Discrimination & Privacy Basis provides equal employment opportunities and prohibits discri
