About this role

## Base Labs Fellowship ### About Baseten Baseten powers mission-critical inference for the world’s most dynamic AI companies (e.g., Cursor, Notion, OpenEvidence, Abridge, Clay, Gamma, and Writer). By uniting applied AI research, flexible infrastructure, and seamless developer tooling, we help frontier AI companies bring cutting-edge models into production. Baseten is growing quickly and recently raised a **$1.5B Series F** (led by Altimeter Capital, Conviction Partners, and Spark Capital). ### About Base Labs Base Labs is a research lab pushing the frontier of **open-source LLMs**. We believe intelligence should be democratized—not controlled by a handful of closed labs. Backed by Baseten’s training and inference infrastructure, we have the compute, resources, and talent to tackle hard problems at the frontier and open-source what we learn. We’re accepting applications on a rolling basis for our first cohort of **Base Labs Fellows**, expected to start in **late September**. This application is for cohorts starting in **Sept 2026 and beyond**. --- ## Base Labs Fellowship Overview The Fellowship is designed to give researchers exposure to what frontier research looks like in industry. Fellows receive **funding, mentorship, and full support**, with the goal of producing rigorous, published research that shapes both the open-source ecosystem and Baseten’s technical roadmap. --- ## What to Expect - **3 months** of full-time research from our **San Francisco** office - **Dedicated 1:1 mentorship** from a senior researcher - **$15,000 stipend** (per 3-months) - Funding for **compute and other research expenses** - Opportunities to **publish and present** at top venues (including **ICML, NeurIPS, and Grace Hopper**) - A clear path to a **full-time offer** for the strongest performers --- ## Mentors Each fellow is matched **1:1** with one of three senior researchers: - Michael Psenka - Max Kirkby - Charles O’Neill *Note: You’re welcome to research mentors’ prior work, but all applications must go through the official process (not the mentors directly).* --- ## Who We’re Looking For We’re looking for exceptional researchers and research engineers—even if they don’t fit the usual credentialist mold. Directional criteria for potential fit: - Enrolled in or recently completed a **PhD** in **ML, AI, statistics,** or a closely related field - A publication record or research portfolio showing **original, rigorous thinking** - Care about what your work is in service of—**not just the problem, but why it matters** - Want **autonomy** and don’t need a predefined roadmap to do your best work - Excited to be in **San Francisco** for the duration of the program, fully embedded in the team - Drawn to building a **research culture**, not just participating in one --- ## Why Base Labs? - **1:1 by design**: three fellows, three mentors—no getting lost - **Real stakes**: your research directly informs what Baseten builds and which workloads it pursues - **A founding moment**: building Base Labs from scratch—the first cohort shapes the culture, research agenda, and brand - **Full support**: housing, meals, travel, and compute handled; barriers removed - **Clear path forward**: top performers are considered for full-time roles --- ## Benefits (for Full-Time Hires) - Competitive compensation, including meaningful equity - **(U.S. only)** 100% coverage of medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents - Flexible PTO, including
