About this role
## About Basis Basis builds real agents that do real work in the real economy. Our agents operate for hours at a time, performing end-to-end work for some of the largest accounting firms in the world. We recently raised $100M at >$1B valuation and are racing to deploy advanced applied ML at production scale. ## About the Role (Site Reliability Engineer) As a Site Reliability Engineer at Basis, you’ll ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of our AI-powered accounting platform. You’ll join a high-leverage infrastructure team at the intersection of product and platform—owning the systems that keep Basis fast, secure, and always on as we scale. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who loves building robust systems, reducing complexity through automation, and taking real ownership. Strong software engineering skills are essential. ## What You’ll Do - Architect, build, and operate reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure for production systems. - Own cloud infrastructure across compute, storage, and networking—optimizing for availability, performance, and cost. - Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and automation to improve developer velocity and system reliability. - Lead incident response: on-call rotations, incident coordination, postmortems, and root cause analyses. - Partner with product and engineering teams to balance reliability, performance, cost, and development speed. - Automate operational workflows (capacity planning, safe rollouts, graceful degradation, data access controls). - Provide technical leadership and mentorship to shape infrastructure team culture and standards. ## What You’ll Bring - 5+ years of experience building and operating production infrastructure at scale. - Strong software engineering fundamentals; proficiency in at least one programming language. - Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure, networking, databases, and security principles. - Experience with CI/CD, containerization, and modern infrastructure automation. - Comfort operating in ambiguous environments and taking end-to-end ownership. **Experience with similar stack (or ability to learn):** - Infrastructure-as-Code: Terraform or CloudFormation - Observability & incident management: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, BetterStack, PagerDuty, SLOs/error budgets - Data/systems powering analytics and customer-facing workloads, especially serverless environments (e.g., Neon, Modal) ## Our Beliefs About the Future of Technical Work - The builder stack collapses: coding agents can move across domains; product teams can offload more decision-making to agents. - Distinctions between frontend/backend, infra/product, and ML/engineering are already melting away. - Engineering > coding: define and verify what can be delegated to agents; focus on problem decomposition, first-principles reasoning, and compounding system design. ## The Kind of Engineer Who Does Well Here - Systems thinking and first principles (net-new problems; no playbook) - Thinking beyond engineering by deeply understanding the domain and workflows - Ownership of outcomes (Basis uses a Responsible Party / RP model) - Agency: pick up the context you need, talk to the right people, read the data, and understand what matters ## Non-Negotiables - In person in Flatiron, NYC **5 days a week** - Excited about working with coding agents (unlimited token budget) - Excited about applying agents to real economy problems ## Benefits at Basis - Comp
