Software Engineering Intern
Base Power · Austin, TX
About this role
**ABOUT BASE** Base is America’s next-generation power company. We’re rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization—electricity—by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that transforms today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. **ABOUT THE ROLE** At Base, we’re building **BaseOS**, the operating system that runs the modern power company. As a **Software Engineering Intern**, you’ll ship real code that runs in production on systems that keep power flowing to real homes. You’ll work across the company on problems that span embedded firmware, backend infrastructure, internal tools, and member-facing products. **WHAT YOU’LL DO** - **Build production systems:** Design, build, and deploy production-grade software across the stack (embedded firmware → backend infrastructure → member-facing products). - **Ship under real constraints:** Write code that runs under real-world conditions where failures can have physical consequences. Reliability is core to the job. - **Scale Base’s operations:** Contribute to internal tools that help expand into new markets, manage deployment complexity, and orchestrate field operations at scale. - **Work across domains:** Partner with hardware, deployment, and operations teams to solve problems spanning software and the physical world. **WHAT YOU’LL BRING** - Strong software engineering fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, systems design). - Demonstrated ability to build and ship working software (side projects, coursework, or prior internships). - Clear, concise communication and comfort in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. - A builder’s mindset: curious, self-directed, and drawn to problems that actually matter. **AREAS YOU CAN WORK IN** *(Please indicate your area(s) of interest when applying)* - **Member software:** Growth, onboarding, and member support (bill pay, live telemetry, grid status, and resilient systems for retries/outages/partial failures). - **Factory software:** Systems of record for parts, vendors, procurement, receiving, and inventory—replacing spreadsheets/manual reconciliation. - **Deployments / fleet software:** Last-mile operations (site evaluation, paperwork automation, scheduling, dispatching crews) plus field tools for installers/electricians. - **Base Power Platform (B2B):** APIs and services for utility partners (fleet state, dispatch, scheduling) with typed, multi-tenant APIs and dispatch commands that can’t be duplicated or lost. - **Distributed compute:** Turning the residential power network into a distributed compute fleet (node enrollment, sessions, routing) for reliable compute workloads. - **Product Engineering:** Full-stack product-focused engineering with a slight emphasis on front-end (React/TypeScript). Product Engineers work across the teams above. **WHY BASE?** Interns at Base work in the same codebase as full-time engineers—no toy projects. You’ll learn from a team that has built and scaled complex systems across energy, aerospace, and hardware. Your code will go live on batteries running in real homes today, help expand beyond Texas and Illinois, and shape how the grid works. **ABOUT THE TEAM** America’s power grid is failing. Electricity costs have risen even as generation gets cheaper, and blackouts are becoming more common. We’re building the software that fixes it—owning the full stack from firmware and trading algorithms to distributed commanding systems, factory sof
