Senior Software Engineer - Billing Platform
Snowflake · US-CA-Menlo Park
About this role
**About the Role** At Snowflake, we’re powering the era of the agentic enterprise. We’re looking for AI-native thinkers who are energized by reinventing how work gets done—using AI as a high-trust collaborator to accelerate impact. The **Billing & Payments Platform** team builds Snowflake’s central data repository and infrastructure for customer resource consumption, revenue processing, invoicing, and reporting. Our systems power Snowflake’s business and enable other engineering teams, while also serving as reference architectures for customers building on Snowflake. **Computing Snowflake’s bills** is a challenging distributed systems problem: real-time usage metering across every cloud and region, plus an evolving catalog of pricing models—including new commercial constructs for **Cortex AI**, **Snowflake Intelligence**, and the broader agentic AI portfolio. Systems must meet strict requirements for **accuracy, auditability, and low-latency processing**. This is a deeply cross-functional role partnering daily with **Product, Finance, Legal, Growth, Go-to-Market Systems, Snowsight UI, Cortex AI**, and product engineering teams. --- **What You’ll Do** - **Own medium-sized projects end-to-end**—from design through launch and operation—and contribute as a key engineer on large, multi-team initiatives. - Build **federated, distributed billing systems** that meter, rate, and invoice usage across every Snowflake service. - Shape **billing strategy for AI products** in partnership with Cortex AI, Intelligence, and Apps (e.g., token-based inference, agent workflows, AI-native subscriptions). - Use **AI as a first-class collaborator** in development, code review, debugging, and on-call triage via **Cortex Code CLI** and **Snowflake Intelligence**. - Own **reliability and correctness**: participate in on-call, debug across unfamiliar areas, and drive systemic fixes to monitoring, alerts, and quality. - Become the go-to expert for one or more billing components (e.g., **metering, rating, invoicing, contracts, payments, threshold billing, fraud, reporting**) and mentor other engineers. - Partner cross-functionally with **Product, Finance, GTM Systems, Growth, Trust, and Legal** to translate business intent into reliable, auditable systems. --- **What We Look For** - **7+ years** of professional software engineering experience building and supporting large-scale, production distributed systems. - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science (or related field) **or equivalent practical experience**. - Strong fundamentals in **distributed systems**: consistency, fault tolerance, idempotency, **exactly-once processing**, queueing, and stream/batch data pipelines. - Strong fundamentals in **databases and data modeling**: SQL fluency, schema design, performance tuning, and operational realities of large-scale data systems. - Proficiency in **Java, Scala, Python, or Go**, plus engineering practices that make systems easy to operate at scale (testing, observability, CI/CD, incremental rollout). - Demonstrated ability to independently design, spec, schedule, and deliver medium-sized projects with quality—and contribute strongly on larger, multi-team efforts. - Track record of owning **reliability**: participating in on-call, debugging production issues across unfamiliar areas, and driving systemic fixes. - Excellent communication skills and a collaborative working style; comfortable partnering with non-engineering stakeholders in Finance, Pro
