**Engineering Manager, Labs — Anthropic** **About Anthropic** Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems—safe and beneficial for users and society. **About the role** Anthropic Labs is an internal accelerator focused on early-stage AI capabilities that can become breakout products and drive meaningful revenue or transform an industry. You’ll lead and grow a team of software engineers working in a zero-to-one environment—creating psychological safety, enabling rapid learning cycles, and maintaining clear direction while navigating uncertainty. You’ll partner closely with designers, product managers, and research teams to turn emerging AI capabilities into potential products—and you’ll be comfortable both championing promising work and shutting down projects that aren’t working. **Responsibilities** - Lead and coach a high-performing team through zero-to-one development, rewarding experimentation and learning - Hire and develop versatile, entrepreneurial engineers who thrive in ambiguity - Partner with design, product, and research leaders to align on direction and execution - Create an environment that balances creative exploration with rigorous evaluation - Help teams structure hypothesis testing, kill decisions, and learning extraction from successes and failures - Facilitate collaboration between Labs engineers and research teams across Anthropic - Provide clear, actionable feedback and support engineer growth as projects shift frequently - Drive adoption of Labs prototypes and learnings to inform company-wide product strategy - Represent the Labs perspective and roadmap with research, product, and leadership stakeholders - Maintain team stability and morale through early-stage uncertainty **You may be a good fit if you** - Have 5+ years of engineering management experience in ambiguous, early-stage, or zero-to-one environments - Have a strong technical background as an IC prior to management (ideally startup/founding engineer experience) - Create psychological safety and help teams navigate uncertainty without burnout - Facilitate decision-making and help teams build good judgment - Model behaviors like comfort killing projects, strong opinions loosely held, and bias toward action - Build and retain generalist teams that can adapt as priorities shift - Demonstrate strong interpersonal intelligence and guide teams through rapid pivots while maintaining trust - Think strategically about high-potential research breakthroughs and viable productization paths - Communicate effectively and tell the story of Labs work and impact - Have broad technical understanding across full-stack engineering and modern product development (familiarity with AI/ML concepts) - Care deeply about responsibly pushing AI capability boundaries in service of Anthropic’s mission **Strong candidates may also have** - Experience managing teams working directly with research organizations or in R&D-adjacent environments - Track record of helping engineers grow in non-traditional career paths - Experience with AI/ML products or working knowledge of large language models - Background building teams from scratch or scaling early-stage organizations - Experience managing through organizational change or frequent strategic pivots **What we’re not looking for** - Managers who only succeed with well-defined roadmaps and stable, long-term projects - Leaders who struggle to give critical feedback or make hard calls on underperform
