**Beacon Biosignals — Staff Software Engineer (PostgreSQL)** Beacon Biosignals is transforming precision medicine for the brain—from clinical development to clinical care. We’re seeking a **Software Engineer IV** to join our **Datastore** team, which sits at the heart of Beacon’s platform. The Datastore defines the foundational data model and provides the centralized repository and API for brain data collected from clinical studies. This role focuses on **backend systems for data infrastructure**: **PostgreSQL data models**, **Kafka-driven event pipelines**, and the **GraphQL API** that makes scientific and clinical data usable (not frontend/end-user product surfaces). You’ll lead the design of complex systems within the Datastore, own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into our warehouse, and collaborate across platform, application, and scientific teams to implement APIs that unlock new workflows across Beacon’s expanding portfolio. --- ### What success looks like - Lead design and architecture for complex Datastore projects, weighing trade-offs with engineering principles and data-backed decisions. - Partner with product managers, scientific/clinical stakeholders, and other teams to translate requirements into integrations, services, and scalable solutions. - Debug and profile ambiguous, cross-system problems; leave codebases better with improved structure, tests, and tooling. - Set a high bar for data integrity, design soundness, and maintainability across the system’s lifespan. - Draft RFCs to drive complex feature discovery and technical design; solicit and incorporate input to align the team. - Plan your work and contribute to team planning with reasoned trade-offs between speed, generalizability, and technical debt. - Teach and mentor engineers; provide feedback people act on; may serve as tech lead or a coordination point for engineering practice. - Improve operational robustness and ease of use via documentation, tools, and dashboards. --- ### What you will bring - **7+ years** backend development experience, including **3+ years** in data platforms/backend infrastructure for data-centric applications (transactional systems, event pipelines, and their APIs). - Deep proficiency in at least one relevant area (data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering) with the depth others rely on. - Strong SQL skills and production experience with **PostgreSQL** as an application database—writing/tuning queries and reasoning about schema design, indexes, and query plans. - Hands-on experience with **data streaming/event processing** (Kafka or equivalents like RabbitMQ/Pulsar/Kinesis). - Proficiency in **Julia or Python** (Julia is core; experience is a plus, not required). - Experience deploying/operating services in containerized environments; familiarity with **Kubernetes** and IaC tools like **Terraform** and/or **Helm**. - A track record of mentoring and improving team practices (tooling, test coverage, documentation). - Collaborative mindset across disciplines. - Excellent written/verbal communication, especially in asynchronous/remote-friendly environments. - Self-directed approach thriving in hybrid/fully remote teams. - Experience with (or interest in) LLM-assisted/agentic coding tools in production with good judgment and guardrails. **For the PostgreSQL & Data Modeling focus:** - Be the person the team comes to for database design and decisions. - Deep PostgreSQL expertise: query planner behav
