## Software Engineer — User Database Infrastructure ### About Notion Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together. We’re building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side—so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. ### About the Role (San Francisco) This role is based in **San Francisco**. We work from our offices on **Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (Anchor Days)**. You’ll build the systems that let knowledge workers leverage **fast, scalable databases** without having to become a DBA. You’ll be a hands-on technical leader helping set **architectural direction and the roadmap** as a new product moves from **early alpha to general availability**. You’ll also work directly with early customers to shape foundational technical and product decisions, then help scale as adoption and workloads grow. This is a **backend-leaning** role spanning the stack. You may: - Provision and manage a fleet of **customer Postgres** instances - Design how **user-defined schemas** evolve safely - Make complex queries execute efficiently - Improve product experiences around loading tables, understanding slow operations, and safe agent data access **Stack:** Postgres, Go, TypeScript, Node.js, React ### What You’ll Achieve - **Take a new product from alpha to general availability** with early customer feedback - **Make real customer workloads fast** (query execution, indexing, client data loading) - **Build systems businesses can trust** (schema changes, concurrent writes, permissions, recovery) - **Make powerful capabilities approachable** (provisioning, migrations, indexes as a reliable product experience) - **Build for the customers who come next** (automate provisioning/fleet ops, strengthen observability, evolve architecture) ### Skills You’ll Need to Bring - **Production relational database experience** (e.g., Postgres/MySQL): schema/index decisions, performance analysis, debugging transactions/locking/concurrency - **Engineering experience + technical leadership:** 10+ years building/operating production software; set direction; lead complex cross-team initiatives; stay hands-on - **Strong backend fundamentals:** correctness under concurrency and failure; reasoning about retries/partial failures/consistency - **Systematic performance approach:** use query plans, traces, profiles, experiments; follow issues across storage/services/client code - **Product judgment:** turn customer problems into technical approaches; recognize better defaults/simpler workflows - **Willingness to work across the stack:** backend depth plus comfort learning unfamiliar systems and working in client code - **Fluency with AI-assisted engineering:** use AI to accelerate exploration/implementation/testing while validating results ### Nice to Have - Experience managing **fleets of databases** or building database platforms (provisioning, upgrades, backups, recovery) - Deep **Postgres expertise** (advanced optimization, tuning, workload isolation) - Experience building reusable data abstractions (query layers, sync engines, CDC pipelines, permission systems) ### Compensation & Benefits Notion offers highly competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits.
