Senior Software Engineer, Build Systems & CI
DoorDash USA · Bay Area, CA; Seattle, WA; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY
About this role
**Senior Software Engineer, Build Systems & CI** **About the Team** The Code Scalability team owns build systems and continuous integration across DoorDash. When shared dependencies change or more teams contribute to a monorepo, build costs can grow for everyone. They tackle this with **Bazel**, **Buildkite**, and supporting infrastructure to keep everyday development efficient—delivering a dependable path from code change to completed build with fewer delays and less troubleshooting. **About the Role** As a Senior Software Engineer on Code Scalability, you’ll solve the engineering problems behind building software at DoorDash’s scale. Changes deep in a monorepo can trigger work across many projects; your job is to make that work **efficient, predictable, and easy to investigate** when something goes wrong. You’ll work across: - **Bazel configuration and tooling** - **Buildkite orchestration** - **Build execution and caching** - **Services that support the platform** You’ll identify where improvements matter most, make technical decisions, and partner with teams across DoorDash to put changes into practice. Progress is measured through outcomes like shorter queues, dependable pipelines, and useful diagnostics—along with the cost and maintainability of the infrastructure you own. **You’re excited about this opportunity because you will…** - Evolve build and CI workflows for large monorepos as dependencies, code volume, and contributing teams grow. - Develop **Bazel rules, toolchains, and integrations** to keep builds reproducible and easier to adopt. - Improve **Buildkite pipeline throughput and reliability** by reducing queue times, addressing bottlenecks, and using CI compute capacity more effectively. - Reduce redundant build work via **dependency analysis, incremental builds, caching, and parallel execution**, balancing developer feedback speed with infrastructure cost. - Build developer tools that explain build failures and help engineers reproduce CI behavior locally. - Rethink what build/CI platforms can do with **AI** (e.g., intelligent diagnosis, PR triage, automated recovery, and guidance). - Instrument and operate build/CI infrastructure using metrics and developer feedback to track latency, reliability, and resource usage. - Lead platform improvements from design through rollout, partner on migrations, and mentor teammates through technical decisions and code reviews. **We’re excited about you because…** - You have **5+ years** of software engineering experience, including developer infrastructure, build systems, or CI platforms. - You write maintainable production software in languages such as **Go, Java, Kotlin, or Python**, with strong debugging and design skills. - You have experience with build/CI systems at scale and can reason about dependencies, incremental builds, caching, and distributed execution (experience with **Bazel**, **Buildkite**, or large monorepos is especially relevant). - You’ve led technical projects across teams, made practical tradeoffs, and carried changes through rollout and operational ownership. - You treat internal platforms as products—listening to developers, improving adoption, and judging success by problems solved. - You can investigate performance/reliability issues across multiple components using evidence to find root causes. - You improve how teams work through mentorship, clear communication, and automation that removes repetitive work. **Compensation & Benefits (high level)** -
