About this role

## About the Team OpenAI’s Hardware organization develops AI-native silicon and system-level solutions for advanced AI workloads. By co-designing chips, systems, tools, and methodologies, the team delivers faster, more efficient, production-ready hardware for OpenAI’s supercomputing platform. ## About the Role Join OpenAI’s First-Party Hardware team as a **Software Engineer**. You’ll design, build, integrate, and validate the software used to manufacture, qualify, and deliver hardware from the factory—creating the infrastructure that coordinates production across internal and external partners. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role where you’ll own implementation, deployment, outputs, and ongoing maintenance/SLAs for critical systems. **Location:** San Francisco, CA (**Hybrid: 3 days/week onsite**). Relocation assistance available. ## What You’ll Do - Design, develop, and maintain software infrastructure for manufacturing process execution and data export. - Own integration across internal customers and vendor systems/processes. - Build and maintain CI, release, and delivery pipelines of tooling for external partners. - Build internal systems to ingest, process, deliver, and visualize critical manufacturing data. - Implement system health monitoring, telemetry, remote diagnostics, and recovery paths. - Develop automation frameworks for board bring-up, rack bring-up, qualification, manufacturing readiness, deployment readiness, and long-term reliability. - Package engineering releases into manufacturing-ready software “recipes” (images, versions, logs, limits, remediation mapping, provisioning hooks, secure artifact handling, traceable data export). - Debug complex production issues across hardware, firmware, kernel, services, networking, power, thermals, boot, provisioning, manufacturing, test, and cloud services. - Partner with hardware/firmware/security/networking/infrastructure/manufacturing/operations teams and external engineering teams to define software contracts and drive issues to closure. - Produce durable architecture notes, runbooks, validation records, and decision documents. ## You Might Thrive If You Have - **7+ years** hands-on experience (or exceptional accomplishments) in system software, platform software, hardware diagnostics, and cloud infrastructure. - Strong programming skills in **C, C++, Rust**, or similar systems languages. - Scripting experience (e.g., **shell, Python**) for automation systems. - Familiarity with **Linux-based hardware platforms**, **OpenBMC**, **Redfish**, firmware update systems, kernel drivers, and fleet management software. - Proven ability to debug live hardware using logs, packet captures, firmware traces, bus captures, lab hosts, BMC journals, Linux tooling, and controlled experiments. - Experience with hardware bring-up, manufacturing/qualification testing, system diagnostics, release validation, or deployment of high-performance compute/accelerator/server/networking/storage/embedded platforms. - Ability to reason across software/firmware/hardware/manufacturing/operations boundaries and turn ambiguity into clear requirements, designs, tests, and decisions. - Track record working with external vendors/manufacturing partners to define deliverables and drive issues to closure. - Security familiarity is a plus (secure boot, firmware signing, provisioning, attestation, certificate handling, trusted update flows, access-control design). ## Compliance Note To comply with U.S. export c
