**AI Technical Lead (Principal Engineer)** **Location:** Cambridge, MA / Hybrid *(In-office 3 days/week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)* **About EverQuote:** AI-powered growth solutions partner for regulated property and casualty insurance. We enable the largest insurance carriers and thousands of agents to maximize customer acquisition across digital channels using proprietary data assets and our AI traffic engine. **The Role:** Design and build an insurance marketplace where AI agents shop on behalf of customers. Own the technical architecture end-to-end—from models and their execution to the MCP server and tools that other AI platforms connect to. This is a hands-on senior role on a small team where your early decisions will shape agentic insurance shopping. **Key Responsibilities:** • Own agent architecture: reasoning location, model selection, packaging, and AI platform connectivity • Build and tune open-weight models; decide when tuning, retrieval, or prompting is optimal • Deploy reliable, fast, affordable agent and MCP server infrastructure with versioning and rollback • Implement programmatic eval sets, guardrails, and monitoring for quality, drift, cost, and speed • Design data models and tools with the AI product lead • Set engineering patterns and standards; maintain documentation • Monitor inference costs and make sustainable trade-offs as volume grows • Publish code, architecture, and findings • Mentor team engineers and provide leadership with regular technical visibility **What You Bring:** • Deep, current hands-on AI/LLM experience (daily work, not sidelines) • Real experience fine-tuning open-weight models (LoRA, QLoRA, SFT, DPO, etc.) • Production LLM system ownership: serving, versioning, rollbacks, cost management • Enterprise-level design and architecture for large, ambitious projects • Strong evaluation, guardrails, and monitoring expertise • Fluency with serving stack: model serving, containers, orchestration, cloud platforms • Excellent communication across technical and non-technical audiences • Comfort with ambiguity and bias for action **Qualifications:** • 8+ years engineering with senior/lead ownership of complex technical systems • Track record shipping large projects with small teams • Hands-on fine-tuning and deployment of open-weight models in production • Enterprise design for high-reliability systems • Strong Python, Rust, and modern LLM stack fluency • Strategic thinking paired with methodical execution • Excellent cross-organizational communication **Compensation:** Base: $202,800–$238,600 + variable bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits **Requirements:** Current, unrestricted US work authorization required.
