About this role

**Staff Design Engineer** **tl;dr**: Own Stylus (Scribe’s design system) and raise the quality bar across the web app, desktop app, browser extension, and marketing site—where design judgment meets front-end engineering, with AI as a collaborator. --- ## About Scribe Scribe helps teams capture how work happens and turn it into a living asset for people and AI agents. Over 94% of the Fortune 500 use Scribe. Since 2019, Scribe has grown to millions of users across hundreds of thousands of businesses. --- ## About the Role You’ll sit at the intersection of design and frontend engineering. You’ll: - Own **Stylus** end-to-end (roadmap, triage, governance, quality) - Drive **design craft** (polish, prototyping, interaction quality) - Build **platform power** (frontend tooling, DevEx, and agent-ready UX patterns) --- ## What You’ll Do - **Own Stylus**: roadmap, triage, and decisions on what goes in—measured by component adoption, accessibility coverage, and documentation health (plus the system survey every 6–12 months). - **Build the hard components**: decide what becomes shared primitives vs. one-offs, and build both. - **Prototype in code**: create interactive React + TypeScript prototypes (animation, keyboard, touch) and validate with real customers. - **Work without handoff**: iterate in Figma and/or directly in code, and estimate interaction cost accurately. - **Prevent drift**: keep tokens aligned, migrate legacy components onto the system, and maintain useful Figma-to-code tooling. - **Make it agent-ready**: explore AI-ready UX patterns and build primitives as more UI is assembled by models. - **Share how you work**: document prompts/patterns/workflows in Cursor and Claude Code; mentor engineers on design principles. --- ## Your First 90 Days (Shape of the Quarter) - **Days 1–30** - Land a real Stylus change in production - Build an honest picture of drift + true accessibility coverage - Observe how designers, engineers, marketing, and customers use the product - **Days 31–60** - Publish the Stylus roadmap + quality bar and start saying no with confidence - Pick and ship the first hard component - Start legacy migration where it pays off most - **Days 61–90** - Automate reporting for adoption, accessibility, and documentation health - Make contributing to Stylus easy and actionable (requests, contributions, exceptions) - Ship the first AI workflows (prompts/skills/tooling) that others can safely use --- ## What We’re Looking For - **8+ years** front-end experience with strong design sensibility and deep CSS/DOM/browser rendering knowledge - Ability to make interaction calls and understand which work is/isn’t worth its cost - Deep design system experience: components, primitives, tokens, versioning, adoption, and governance - You shape the work (roadmap ownership, knowing when to say no) - Comfort building with AI tools like **Cursor** and **Claude Code** - Accessibility, keyboard/touch input, and user preferences handled by default --- ## Nice to Have - Figma plugins/automations/CI checks for adoption + accessibility - Web components or multi-framework experience - Desktop apps or browser extensions (especially always-on) - Agent-facing or generative UI work --- ## Location **Hybrid** — based in **San Francisco**. In-office **3 days/week**. --- ## Compensation & Benefits - Salary varies by location; full-time employees receive **equity** - Health/dental/vision insurance - Flexible PTO + company holida
