**Software Developer III** **Overview** Join a team delivering real-time weather alerts and observations to hundreds of millions of people globally. We're seeking a Software Developer III with deep expertise in backend architecture, mentorship, and problem-solving to lead the design and development of backend software processing real-time weather data flows. **Location** State College, PA, USA (HQ) or Remote **Key Responsibilities** • Lead design, development, testing, and maintenance of complex backend software processors for real-time weather data ingestion, validation, transformation, and distribution • Own end-to-end backend data flows from source system through validation to production database • Design and implement new processing capabilities and enhance existing processors • Own database schema design and implementation for backend processing applications • Define reliability, performance, and scalability standards for backend processing software • Drive technical alignment across engineers, data operations, product managers, and stakeholders • Investigate and resolve complex software defects and production incidents • Conduct code reviews and provide technical guidance to other developers • Mentor less experienced developers in relational schema design and backend data processing • Define documentation standards and evaluate emerging technologies for team adoption **Required Qualifications** • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or related field • 5+ years designing and developing backend software or distributed systems • Advanced experience with Scala or Java, including functional programming concepts • Expertise in cloud environments (Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud) • Deep experience with relational database architecture, schema design, SQL, and performance optimization • Proven experience architecting solutions for XML, JSON, RESTful APIs, and multiple external data providers • Experience leading software design discussions and technical decision-making **Preferred Qualifications** • Experience with event-driven, distributed, or message-based systems • Experience with weather, environmental, geospatial, or Earth science data • Experience integrating data from multiple external providers or APIs • Proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Azure • Experience mentoring other software developers • Ability to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced environments **Skills & Competencies** • High-level verbal and written communication across technical and non-technical audiences • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills • Strong troubleshooting and debugging abilities • Ability to communicate technical concepts and data processing workflows clearly
