Staff Tech Lead Software Engineer, Vehicle Realism Platform
Waymo · Mountain View, CA, USA; San Francisco, CA, USA
About this role
**About Waymo** Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to be the world’s most trusted driver. Since starting as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can be applied across a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. **About the Simulator Team** The Simulator Team builds state-of-the-art simulations of realistic environments for testing and training the Waymo Driver. The team includes software engineers, ML engineers, and data scientists. They develop simulation solutions that model the real world—self-driving vehicle simulation, realistic agents (vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists), roads, traffic control systems, weather conditions, and the full sensor suite (camera, LiDAR, and radars). This enables testing on millions of miles of traffic before deploying on the road. **About the VRP (Vehicle Realism Platform) Team** The VRP team builds tools and systems to enable realistic autonomous-driving simulation capabilities across hardware platforms and diverse driving conditions. VRP manages the interface between the core Simulator Architecture and the physical representation of the vehicle, including platform expression, physics, environment, timing, and hardware models—ensuring simulation signals reflect real-world driving behavior. **What you will do** - Collaborate with onboard and research engineers to scale simulation and achieve critical Waymo milestones. - Monitor and improve the reproducibility, reliability, and usability of the Waymo simulator. - Design long-term architectures to support a growing number of internal customers and product requirements. - Bridge vehicle subsystems and simulation infrastructure to enhance overall robotic realism. - Partner closely with collaborators across Simulator, Eval, Hardware, and Onboard to integrate building blocks into reliable, reproducible simulation solutions. **What you have** - Hands-on experience building a popular (internal or external-facing) product. - Backend experience (workflows, databases, SQL, production monitoring, etc.). - Strong C++ skills. **We prefer** - Experience with the release of software in a highly distributed heterogeneous environment.
