**Senior Staff Software Engineer, Onboarding and Activation** **About the Role:** Own the experience that turns signups into activated, thriving customers. You'll build the signup-to-activation experience end-to-end, shipping measurable improvements to how quickly new customers get up and running on Gusto. This is a 0-to-1 role full of net-new problems—you'll invent experiences across web, SMS, WhatsApp, and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude. **Day-to-Day:** • Own meaningful slices of signup-to-activation end-to-end (data model to UI) • Invent and prototype net-new experiences—bring your own ideas, don't just implement specs • Partner with Product, Design, and Data to frame problems and validate with customers in weeks • Identify where AI removes customer effort and build those experiences thoughtfully • Design modular, reusable onboarding building blocks for quick iteration • Raise the engineering bar through technical direction, code quality, and mentorship • Ship the simplest version that proves/disproves an idea, then iterate **What We're Looking For:** • 10+ years of software engineering experience building customer-facing products at scale • Product-minded engineer who starts from customer problems and metrics that matter • Ability to move fast and execute with high quality—ship, measure, iterate • Experience applying AI/LLM capabilities to real product problems with good judgment • Founder mindset: high ownership, comfort with ambiguity, bias toward action • Track record of raising the bar through technical leadership and mentorship • Strong full-stack fundamentals with versatility across front end, back end, and data **Compensation & Location:** Targeted at $223,000–$278,000/yr (San Francisco) plus equity. Hybrid: 2–3 days/week in office (Denver, San Francisco, NYC, or Scottsdale).
