Engineering Manager TLM Platform
Harper · San Francisco
About this role
## Engineering Manager — TLM Platform ### About the role Harper is building an AI-first insurance distribution system to replace slow, opaque, human-led workflows. We’re growing rapidly (100x since last year) and adding ~1,000 customers per month. This Engineering Manager role will build the team and systems that the rest of engineering depends on. As the platform scales, your work compounds across the organization—enabling faster product shipping, stronger observability, reliable production operations, and improved developer velocity. ### What you’ll own - **Infrastructure**: cloud, third-party vendors, and everything around them - **Developer productivity**: AI tooling and “harnesses” that make Harper genuinely AI-first for every engineering team - **SRE & production support**: production discipline as we enter a high-growth, high-scale phase (you’ve run SRE before) ### Team & scope - Team starts at **2 people** and will grow to **5–6 over the next three months** - Because the team is small, you’ll be **hands-on at the start** (EM/TLM will work directly alongside engineers and do the work themselves) - Each of the three areas can grow into larger sub-teams over time ### What you’ll do - Own and scale **infrastructure** (AWS/GCP, vendors, reliability, cost, and performance) - Build **developer productivity** improvements for an AI-first engineering org - Lead **SRE/production support** practices (on-call, SLAs/SLOs, operational excellence) - **Build and grow the team** from 2 to 5–6 in the near term - Stay **hands-on** while transitioning toward broader managerial scope ### You might be a fit if… - You have **2+ years as a line manager** directly managing teams of **6–10** (or are clearly ready to grow into that role) - You have **hands-on AWS or GCP** experience and strong **database troubleshooting** skills - You’ve worked at real scale (e.g., **~1M requests/minute**) - You can troubleshoot across **databases, networking, compute, Docker, Kubernetes**, and related infrastructure - You care about **developer productivity and AI tooling** as much as raw infrastructure - You understand **on-call practices, SLAs, SLOs, and SRE practices** - You move fast and enjoy hands-on work ### Nice to have - Your own network to draw on for hiring (or comfort working closely with recruiters) - Experience building developer productivity tooling and AI harnesses - Experience building a team from a very small base - Prior startup experience, especially through hypergrowth ### Compensation & logistics - **Salary:** $225,000–$275,000 - **Location:** San Francisco, **in-office** (SF-based or willing to relocate) - **Schedule:** Mon–Fri, **5 days/week in-office** - **Benefits:** Uber commuter benefits; breakfast/lunch/dinner provided; snacks/drinks/coffee daily; free gym membership; health/dental/vision insurance ### Hiring process 1. Hiring Manager screen — **30 min video** 2. Technical screen — **60 min remote** (project deep dive + system design) 3. Super Day — **on-site** (meet the team, sit in on operations, do real work alongside us) > **Application note:** Please mention the word **DAUNTLESS** and tag **RMmEwNjo5OGMwOjM2MDA6OjEwMw==** when applying.
