**Senior Linux Systems Engineer – Infrastructure & Operations** **Position Type:** Full-time, Remote (US-based) **Schedule:** Workday begins 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time **Salary Range:** $100,000 - $140,000 annually **About the Role** Nationwide IT Services seeks a hands-on Linux Systems Engineer to support mission-critical scientific systems for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This role focuses on Linux systems administration and technical operations across applications, databases, networking, automation, monitoring, and security. **Key Responsibilities** • Administer and troubleshoot Linux-based production, development, and test infrastructure • Investigate system and application problems through logs, monitoring data, and configuration analysis • Perform root-cause analysis and drive problems toward resolution • Execute system maintenance, patching, configuration, and performance troubleshooting • Support system security, hardening, and compliance activities • Maintain automation and configuration-management capabilities • Work with monitoring systems and relational databases at operational level • Develop scripts and lightweight automation for administration and troubleshooting • Collaborate across teams to resolve cross-domain technical issues **Required Qualifications** • 5+ years hands-on Linux systems administration experience (enterprise/production environments) • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis ability • Deep Linux knowledge: services, processes, logs, filesystems, permissions, packages • Hands-on scripting/automation experience • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls) • Practical database familiarity (installation, configuration, basic SQL) • System security concepts understanding • Ability to investigate unfamiliar technologies independently • Strong technical communication and collaboration skills • High school diploma or equivalent • US residency required; must obtain Government Public Trust clearance and PIV card **Highly Desirable Experience** RHEL/Rocky Linux • Python/Bash • PostgreSQL • Ansible • Nagios • Prometheus/Grafana • NATS/ActiveMQ • SELinux • DISA STIGs/FISMA • AWS • CI/CD pipelines • Git/GitLab • Distributed systems support **Benefits** Medical, dental, vision • Life/disability insurance • 401(k) with match • Paid holidays & PTO • Commuter benefits • EAP • Educational reimbursement • Pet insurance
