**Backend Software Engineer, ChatGPT ImageGen** **About the Team** The Image Generation team at OpenAI supports advanced AI capabilities for hundreds of millions of users. We enable users to create, edit, and transform images through natural language, working at the intersection of research, infrastructure, and product. **About the Role** We're seeking an experienced Backend Engineer to build systems powering image creation and editing across ChatGPT. You'll work on scalable services, orchestration systems, APIs, storage platforms, and distributed infrastructure supporting billions of image generations. **Key Responsibilities** • Design and operate backend systems for image generation and editing • Develop scalable APIs and infrastructure for multimodal AI workflows • Optimize reliability, latency, throughput, and cost across distributed systems • Partner with researchers to productionize new capabilities • Collaborate with mobile, web, and full-stack engineers • Drive technical architecture decisions • Use data to improve user experience and system efficiency • Provide technical leadership and mentorship **Ideal Candidate** • Experience building and operating large-scale backend/distributed systems • Strong proficiency in modern backend technologies and cloud-native architectures • Experience designing APIs and highly reliable production systems • Analytical mindset with data-driven decision making • Strong ownership and comfort with ambiguity • Excited about multimodal AI and visual creation infrastructure • Curious about translating cutting-edge AI research into products at scale **About OpenAI** OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity.
