We operate in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment focused on technical precision, continuous learning, and high code quality. **THE OPPORTUNITY** As a Lead AI Developer Tooling Engineer, you will serve as a technical linchpin for the team building the tools Appian's engineers rely on—IDEs, CLIs, code-analysis, and CI/CD workflows—and the layer that brings AI capabilities into their daily development. **WHAT YOU'LL DO** • Develop clean software and architect developer-facing tools and services • Build IDE integrations, CLIs, code-analysis, and CI/CD tooling • Use AI coding tools fluently as a force multiplier • Surface AI capabilities to developers through transparent, debuggable workflows • Optimize performance, availability, and latency of developer tooling • Drive engineering excellence and code quality across the department • Mentor and guide junior engineers on software craftsmanship • Share expert domain knowledge and publish technical documentation **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** • BS in Computer Science or related technical discipline • 7+ years software development experience (or 5+ with Master's degree) • Experience building IDE, CLI, code-analysis, CI/CD, or developer-experience tools • Working knowledge of local/remote execution, telemetry, privacy, and enterprise deployment • Strong language-server, parser, build-system, source-control, and diagnostics experience • Demonstrated experience using AI coding assistants in production contexts • Experience developing and maintaining high-volume, mission-critical production services • Exceptional ability to communicate technical architectures to diverse audiences **PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS** • Strong experience with public cloud infrastructure • Experience with enterprise platforms such as Salesforce or ServiceNow **LOCATION & WORK ARRANGEMENT** McLean, Virginia headquarters | 5 days/week in-office **COMPENSATION & BENEFITS** Base Salary: $150,000–$300,000 USD Benefits include 401(k) match, flexible time off, paid parental leave, medical/dental/vision, life/disability insurance, wellness programs, HSA contributions, employee referral bonuses, and learning resources.
