**Senior Software Engineer, Storage - Distributed Caching** **About the Team** The Distributed Caching team owns every caching offering at DoorDash end to end, including ElastiCache (Redis/Valkey), Boulder (KVRocks-based key-value store), Entity Cache, and the Distributed Lock Service. The team runs ~400 ElastiCache clusters serving hundreds of millions of GET requests per second, and Boulder serves billions of feature lookups per second at peak. **About the Role** You'll drive Boulder's evolution to scale further, improve cost efficiency, and enhance performance. You'll re-platform the Distributed Lock Service onto a strongly consistent backend and build self-serve tooling that lets customers describe a workload and get the right backend. You'll go deep on cache invalidation, replication, sharding, compaction, and failover while shipping guardrails, automation, and observability. **Location:** San Francisco, Seattle, or New York Metro Area (Hybrid) **Key Responsibilities** • Own high-leverage caching and locking services at multi-million QPS scale • Build and scale Boulder, including compaction, sharding, and domain isolation • Re-platform the Distributed Lock Service with sharding • Contribute to standardized smart caching clients with failover and observability defaults • Diagnose production issues and turn them into durable guardrails • Collaborate with teams across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo **Requirements** • 6+ years designing, building, and operating distributed, stateful systems in production • At least 2 years with caching or key-value storage at meaningful scale • Proficiency in Go, or Java/Kotlin with deep expertise in concurrency and distributed systems • Hands-on experience with Redis/Valkey, Memcached, or similar technologies • Understanding of distributed systems fundamentals: consistency, sharding, replication, consensus • Experience with capacity planning and cost discipline at scale • Proven track record shipping reliable infrastructure end to end • Proficiency with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) **Preferred** • Production experience with ElastiCache, Memcached, or Valkey • Experience with KVRocks or RocksDB-family storage engines • Experience building or operating a distributed lock service • Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure operations experience • Open-source contributions to caching, storage, or distributed systems **Compensation** $159,800 – $235,000 USD (based on skills, experience, location, and market conditions) Equity grants available.
