**Sr. Manager, Software Engineering - Machine Learning Simulations** **About the Role** Lead Upstart's Machine Learning and Simulations Platform team, which builds infrastructure for ML model training, feature engineering, inference, and marketplace simulation. Own the engineering roadmap for a platform that runs ~1,000 simulations monthly and is trusted by ML teams for launch decisions. **Key Responsibilities** • Own the engineering roadmap and decide which teams/use cases the simulation platform serves • Lead, coach, and grow a team of engineers working across distributed services, offline pipelines, and large-scale compute • Raise simulation reliability and accuracy to production-grade standards with automated drift detection • Reduce simulation costs as usage grows through smart architecture and compute choices • Extend coverage across the lending funnel and new loan products • Turn recurring questions from ML, analytics, and capital markets partners into self-serve workflows **Minimum Qualifications** • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience • 8+ years software engineering experience (3+ years engineering management) • Experience leading teams building/operating backend platforms or distributed systems in production • Experience delivering platform/infrastructure programs spanning multiple teams • Proficiency with: Python, Kotlin, AWS, Kubernetes, Databricks, and/or Spark **Preferred Qualifications** • Knowledge of simulation, backtesting, experimentation, or offline model evaluation systems • Experience supporting ML teams or operating MLOps infrastructure • Knowledge of lending, pricing, credit risk, or marketplace economics • Treat compute cost and efficiency as engineering goals alongside reliability • Experience developing senior engineers and emerging engineering leaders **Location & Travel** 🌍 Remote (East/West coast time zones) ✈️ Quarterly in-person onsites (2-4 days) **Compensation** 💰 $195,300 – $270,400 USD (base salary, varies by location) 📊 Bonus, equity, comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k match, ESPP, PTO, parental leave, wellness allowance) **About Upstart** Leading AI lending marketplace partnering with banks and credit unions.
