**Software Engineering Manager (Machine Learning)** **About the role** Cedar is looking for a **Software Engineering Manager (Machine Learning)** to lead development of the machine learning systems behind our **Personalization Engine** within **Cedar Pay**. You’ll own the end-to-end ML lifecycle—building production-grade systems that serve as the “decisioning brain” for personalized patient experiences across multiple product squads. **Key responsibilities** - **ML System Ownership:** Serve as the key DRI for the ML system powering the Personalization Engine; own reliability, scalability, and model effectiveness. - **Full-Stack ML Execution:** Lead hands-on work across **MLOps** (feature stores, deployment/inference/monitoring pipelines) and **ML modeling** (e.g., ensemble methods, reinforcement learning, multi-armed bandits), with guardrails for compliance and fairness. - **Technical Leadership & People Management:** Conduct rigorous code/design reviews, raise the team’s bar, and directly manage/mentor **two ML engineers**. - **Balance Rigor with a Bias for Action:** Build robust systems for **millions of healthcare transactions**, while enabling rapid iteration as new data and insights emerge. - **Feedback Loop Optimization:** Improve the feedback loop that captures patient reactions to real-time decisions so models can learn and adapt to changing economic and healthcare landscapes. - **Cross-Functional Leadership:** Partner with Product and Design to translate ambiguous patient journey touchpoints into concrete ML problems. **Required skills & experience** - **6+ years** of professional experience in **machine learning engineering**, including building/deploying personalization or recommendation systems at scale for consumer-facing products. - Strong **Python and SQL** skills; hands-on across the full ML lifecycle (pipelines, feature engineering, training, and MLOps for serving/monitoring). - **1+ years** managing ML engineers/scientists (or IC Tech Lead ML experience with informal/dotted-line management responsibilities—tailored growth plan available). - Experience collaborating closely with product leaders and software engineers. - **ROI-driven mindset:** Ability to frame business problems as supervised/unsupervised/RL tasks and judge when simpler non-ML approaches are higher ROI. - Motivation to improve the **healthcare financial experience**. **Nice-to-have (not required)** - Experience with **agentic personalization** / integrating GenAI into personalization systems. - Experience leading software products beyond AI/ML components. **Compensation & benefits** - **Salary range:** **$195,500 – $247,000** *(subject to location, experience, and education)* - **Equity eligible** - Competitive benefits and wellness package - **#LI-Remote #LI-JJ2** **What we offer** - Opportunity to improve the U.S. healthcare system at a high-growth company - Flexibility to work from home or in the office (unless otherwise stated) - **Unlimited PTO** for exempt employees (encouraged: at least **20 days/year**) - **16 weeks paid parental leave** with health benefits - Employee resource groups: **be@cedar**, **Pridecones**, **Cedar Women+** - Health benefits starting the first of the month following your start date (or on your start date if it’s the first) - **401(k) match:** 100% up to **3%** of annual compensation - Mentorship, coaching, and a learning & development budget **About Cedar** Cedar was co-founded in 2016 after a negative medical bill
