**Machine Learning Engineer, Ranking & Retrieval** **About the Role** ClickUp is seeking an experienced Machine Learning Engineer to join the Search team. You'll own ML systems powering search relevance for millions of users and ground AI in the right context. **Your Impact** • Own the full ML lifecycle for ranking and retrieval—from training through deployment and production serving • Build systems that decide what surfaces first in search across large-scale, user-generated content • Design and scale hybrid retrieval combining lexical and vector search • Run embedding inference at billions-of-documents scale • Improve query understanding through intent modeling and query expansion • Build permissions-aware retrieval respecting multi-tenant boundaries **Core Responsibilities** • Train, deploy, and serve ranking models in production • Build ranker features, training pipelines, and offline evaluation frameworks • Design hybrid retrieval systems (lexical + vector, including HNSW with disk offloading) • Create measurement frameworks to evaluate and improve search quality • Collaborate with Search Infrastructure, AI, and backend teams **Requirements** • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field • 5+ years of ML engineering experience in ranking, retrieval, or information retrieval • Proven full ML lifecycle ownership in production • Hands-on ranker model training and feature engineering • Experience building hybrid retrieval systems • Large-scale embedding inference experience • Strong query understanding fundamentals **Preferred Qualifications** • Permission-aware retrieval and multi-tenancy experience • Large-scale user-generated content indexing • OpenSearch or Elasticsearch experience • NLP, semantic search, or agentic retrieval background • TypeScript in backend systems **Location:** Remote **Equal Opportunity Employer** | ClickUp is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace.
