**Research Engineer — Takeoff Intel (Anthropic)** ## About Anthropic Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems—safe and beneficial for users and society. ## About the team: Takeoff Intel Takeoff Intel measures the “recursion” of AI development from the inside. The team designs evaluations of AI R&D capabilities, builds internal telemetry to track how much of model development becomes AI-assisted, and develops quantitative methods to translate those signals into a calibrated view of capability growth. Your work supports both internal safety planning and external reporting/collaboration with third-party evaluators. ## About the role As a **Research Engineer** on Takeoff Intel, you’ll build and run the evaluation and measurement instruments that make this research possible. This is a generalist role on a small team where you’ll work across: - evals infrastructure - large-scale data processing - analysis tooling You’ll prioritize **shipping** and building **working prototypes**—often moving quickly from a vague research question to a running instrument. **Hiring at both junior and senior levels.** ## Responsibilities - Design, build, and run capability evaluations and measurement instruments at scale - Build data + analysis pipelines to turn large volumes of model outputs and telemetry into reliable metrics - Prototype new instruments quickly, validate them, and decide what to keep - Review and supervise AI-written code as part of the normal workflow - Partner with research scientists and teams to define what’s worth measuring - Contribute to internal write-ups and public reporting ## You may be a good fit if you - Have shipped an evaluation, data product, or research library end-to-end - Prototype fast and are comfortable throwing code away - Handle messy, large-volume data without over-engineering - Have run experiments on large language models (not just moved outputs) - Can work from a vague question rather than a full spec - Communicate results clearly and collaborate closely with researchers ## Strong candidates may also have - Built evaluation harnesses or benchmark infrastructure for LLMs - Experience with large-scale ML/data infrastructure (e.g., observability, self-driving, or similar) alongside ML exposure - Built tools/libraries other researchers rely on - A track record of catching issues in AI-written code ## Logistics - **Minimum education:** Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education/training/experience) - **Required field of study:** Relevant to the role (via coursework, training, or experience) - **Minimum years of experience:** Varies by internal job level - **Location-based hybrid policy:** Expect to be in an office at least **25%** of the time (some roles may require more) - **Visa sponsorship:** Yes—Anthropic makes reasonable efforts to sponsor visas, with support from an immigration lawyer ## Compensation **Annual Salary:** **$350,000 — $850,000 USD** ## Apply / Safety note Anthropic recruiters only contact candidates from **@anthropic.com** email addresses.
