## Platform Architect — Instructure ### About the role As a **Platform Architect** at Instructure, you’ll be a technical leader and key contributor to the design, development, and delivery of our **developer portal** and **Platform as a Service (PaaS)** products and services. You’ll drive architectural decisions, mentor engineering teams, and help ensure the **scalability, reliability, and performance** of our platforms—directly shaping the Instructure developer experience and learning experiences for millions worldwide. ### Key responsibilities - Lead architectural design and technical direction for **PaaS** features, services, and platform components. - Drive development of complex software solutions; write **high-quality, maintainable, well-tested** code. - Provide technical leadership and mentorship across multiple engineering teams; promote best practices in **code quality** and **system design**. - Partner with Engineering Managers, **SRE**, and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical specifications and deliver solutions. - Evaluate new technologies, tools, and methodologies to improve development processes, performance, and product capabilities. - Conduct thorough code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards and architectural principles. - Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues using **root cause analysis** and preventative measures. - Serve as a subject matter expert; share knowledge across the organization. - Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and infrastructure. ### Qualifications - **Bachelor’s or Master’s** in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience). - **10+ years** progressive software development experience, including **3+ years** in a lead or principal engineering role. - Deep expertise designing, building, and scaling **highly available distributed systems**. - Proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., **Ruby, Python, Java, JavaScript, Go**) and familiarity with modern web frameworks. - Experience with cloud platforms (**AWS, Azure, GCP**) and containerization (**Docker, Kubernetes**). - Strong understanding of database systems (relational and NoSQL) and data modeling. - Proven ability to drive technical initiatives from conception through deployment and maintenance. - Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. - Demonstrated mentoring/coaching experience and ability to foster collaboration. - Experience with **Agile** and **DevOps** practices. ### Benefits & culture (highlights) - Competitive compensation and participation in an **ownership program** - Flexible work culture (remote, hybrid, or in-office depending on role/location) - Generous time off, including local holidays and the annual **“Dim the Lights”** period - Wellness programs and mental health support - Learning & development resources, including professional development tools and tuition reimbursement - Employee recognition program (**Motivosity**) - Inclusive culture rooted in support and meaningful connection - Equal Opportunity Employer; background check required - Identity verification may be required during hiring (per local privacy laws)
