**Software Engineer, Host Assurance** **About the Team** The Host Assurance team makes bare metal and VMs dependable & scalable foundations for OpenAI's infrastructure. Operating at the trust boundary between hardware and cloud-scale orchestration, the team ensures hosts are secure by default, verifiable in practice, and resilient across providers. **About the Role** Build and operate services, APIs, and host software that establish and maintain trust in OpenAI's compute infrastructure. You'll own production software from design through testing, rollout, observability, and operation—supporting machine identity, certificate issuance, secure bootstrap, and host attestation across bare-metal and VM environments. **Key Responsibilities** • Design and operate Host Assurance platform components that establish trust in hosts before production use • Build systems for machine identity, certificate issuance, HSM-backed trust services, host attestation, and baseline verification • Validate hardware and firmware against vendor claims; detect and manage drift over time • Own software components through implementation, launch, and ongoing operation • Define readiness criteria, establish monitoring, plan rollouts, and maintain runbooks • Participate in production support via oncall rotation • Work across deployment models and provider boundaries while maintaining consistent trust outcomes **You Might Thrive If You Have** • Strong experience building and operating reliable production systems at scale • Depth in distributed systems, backend/platform engineering, operating systems, or infrastructure security • Experience with PKI, HSMs, machine identity, attestation, secure boot, or hardware security (valuable but not required) • Ability to reason across services, APIs, and host software • Experience supporting critical production systems and being on-call • Balance of rigor with pragmatism in deploying security controls • Self-directed mindset and willingness to work across disciplines **About OpenAI** An AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity.
