**Director, Software Engineering** **About the Role** Lead a full-stack software engineering team at Element Biosciences building software for multi-omic instruments and platforms. This is a hands-on director role: ~60% individual contributor (writing production code, driving architecture, design reviews) and ~40% management (mentoring, team growth, hiring). **Key Responsibilities** • Lead and mentor developers across frontend, backend, cloud, instrument software, and CLI/API • Set technical direction and align team execution with company goals • Own hiring, 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development • Champion AI-forward SDLC practices (Cursor, Claude, agentic workflows) • Contribute hands-on across the stack: React, Go, AWS, Temporal, Ubuntu • Drive architecture and design reviews; own end-to-end product delivery • Partner with product, chemistry, hardware, and adjacent teams • Manage regulated software workflows (IEC 62304, ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820) **Required Experience** • 10+ years software engineering; 3+ years managing engineering teams • Production-grade full-stack shipping (frontend, backend, cloud, orchestration) • Fluency with: Go, React, MongoDB, Redis, gRPC, GraphQL, Temporal, AWS • Daily use of AI coding assistants; experience scaling agentic SDLC workflows • Experience with instrumentation, cloud SaaS, and CLI/API tooling • Regulated software experience (design controls, V&V, traceability) **Preferred** • Life sciences, multi-omic, DNA sequencing, or scientific instrumentation background • ML/AI feature shipping experience • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Bioengineering, or related field **Location & Compensation** 📍 San Diego, CA (on-site) 💰 $180,000 - $254,000 base + stock options, bonus, benefits, 401k match, flexible PTO **Reports to:** VP, Software
