## System Engineer — Cloudflare Hyperdrive ### About Us At Cloudflare, we’re on a mission to help build a better Internet. We protect and accelerate Internet applications online—without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. ### Available Locations **Austin, TX** or **Seattle, WA** ### About the Role The **Cloudflare Hyperdrive** team builds technology that makes **regional databases feel global**. Hyperdrive is part of the Cloudflare Developer Platform that accelerates database queries from **Cloudflare Workers** by **pooling connections** and **caching data at the edge**. By eliminating the massive latency overhead of **TCP**, **TLS**, and database-specific handshakes, Hyperdrive helps developers use familiar databases (e.g., **PostgreSQL** and **MySQL**) without typical serverless “cold start” penalties. ### Responsibilities - **Global Connection Pooling:** Maintain “warm” connections to origin databases across the globe, reducing connection times by up to **90%**. - **Intelligent Query Caching:** Automatically cache frequently run read queries as close to the user as possible. - **Protocol-Aware Proxying:** Custom implementations of **PostgreSQL** and **MySQL** wire protocols to parse and optimize traffic in real time. - **Seamless Integration:** Works with existing **ORMs** and drivers via a simple connection string that “just works.” - **Distributed Team:** Team is geographically distributed across North America. - **Own Your Code:** From inception to release—design docs, bug fixes, and delivery across the software stack. You may work with **Rust, Go, C++, TypeScript**, and more. ### Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience - **4+ years** professional experience with **Rust, Go, or C++**; code that respects **CPU and memory constraints**. - Comfortable with the **Linux networking stack**; strong understanding of **TCP/IP**, **TLS**, and **WebSockets**. - Deep understanding of databases: connection lifecycles, transaction states, and wire protocols. - Enjoy debugging complex distributed systems and building for **“five nines”** reliability. ### Bonus Points - Experience with **PgBouncer**, **ProxySQL**, or custom database middleware. - Familiarity with the **Cloudflare Workers** ecosystem and stateful connection challenges in ephemeral computing. - Contributions to database drivers, ORMs, or low-level networking libraries. - Experience using **eBPF**, **perf**, or other profiling tools to find and eliminate bottlenecks. ### Compensation & Equity - Compensation may vary by work location. - For **NYC, NJ, Washington, Washington DC, and California (excluding Bay Area)**: **$150,000 – $206,000** estimated annual salary. - Eligible to participate in **Cloudflare’s equity plan**. ### Benefits Cloudflare offers a comprehensive benefits package (health, financial, and time off programs).
