We operate one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties—protecting and accelerating applications without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. ### Available Locations Austin, TX; Seattle, WA; or London, UK ### About the Role Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) is where new and bold products are built and released within Cloudflare. This team leverages Cloudflare’s edge and network to deliver entirely new tools and products at massive scale. ### Is this role a fit for you? We’re looking for engineers who build infrastructure software from scratch—not people who configure, manage, or scale existing platforms (e.g., Kafka, Flink, Spark, Databricks, Snowflake). This role focuses on writing the code that replaces those tools. ### Responsibilities - Design and implement foundational layers of Cloudflare’s next-generation data services, working backward from developer needs. - Own your code from inception to release, delivering solutions across the software stack. - Expect to architect globally distributed data consistency models, optimize storage engine performance, and design novel APIs for data-centric products. - Work with languages and technologies including (but not limited to) JavaScript, TypeScript, Rust, and C++. ### Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience - 6+ years designing, building, and deploying internals of large-scale distributed systems or storage engines from scratch. - Direct experience writing core components of a storage or streaming system. - Proven ability to debug, profile, and fix complex race conditions, split-brain scenarios, and network partition failures at the infrastructure layer. - Expert-level proficiency in Rust or C++ for systems programming. ### Bonus Points - Experience building time-series databases, log-structured merge-trees, or real-time stream processing engines from the ground up. - Academic or professional contributions to distributed systems research (e.g., consensus, CRDTs, or database theory). ### Compensation & Equity - Compensation may be adjusted by work location. - For New York City, New Jersey, Washington, Washington DC, and California (excluding Bay Area) based hires: **Estimated annual salary $185,000–$254,000**. - This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan. ### Benefits (Highlights) - Medical/Rx, Dental, Vision - Flexible Spending Accounts, Commuter Spending Accounts - Fertility & Family Forming benefits - On-demand mental health support and Employee Assistance Program - Global Travel Medical Insurance - Short & Long Term Disability, Life & Accident Insurance - 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan, Employee Stock Participation Plan - Flexible paid time off and parental/medical/bereavement leave ### Notes - Applicants progressing to the offer stage may be asked to attend an in-person interview. - This position may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws. - Cloudflare is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities. *Sound like something you’d like to be a part of?
