**Senior Software Engineer, Distributed Databases** **Locations:** Austin, TX | Seattle, WA | London, UK **About the Role** Join Cloudflare's Storage Infrastructure team within Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI). You'll own distributed database systems running across Cloudflare's edge network, powering services like R2, Durable Objects, and Workers KV. Go beyond database operations to solve underlying infrastructure challenges. **Key Responsibilities** • Add features and extensions to distributed databases for R2, Durable Objects, and Workers KV • Maintain correctness through code review, testing, and staged rollouts • Tune performance and resource utilization in production • Optimize data placement and replication for edge topology • Build observability and tooling for database consumers • Work with Go, Rust, Saltstack, and Terraform **Required Experience** • Source-code level experience with distributed databases or storage systems (CockroachDB, TiDB, FoundationDB, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.) • Strong programming in Go, Rust, C++, or similar systems language • Deep understanding of distributed systems: consensus protocols, replication, MVCC, transaction isolation, fault tolerance • Experience debugging complex codebases with correctness constraints • Knowledge of LSM-tree storage engines (RocksDB, LevelDB, Pebble) • Storage fundamentals: block devices, filesystems, SSD characteristics • High-throughput, low-latency systems experience • Network fundamentals for distributed storage • Infrastructure as code and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Clickhouse) • Strong communication skills **Compensation & Benefits** • Salary: $185,000 - $254,000 (varies by location) • Equity participation • Medical, dental, vision insurance • 401(k), flexible PTO, parental leave • Mental health support and EAP **About Cloudflare** Cloudflare powers millions of websites and internet properties globally.
