Software Engineer, Full Stack

About this role
## About Plane Plane’s mission is to build the infrastructure the world’s work runs on—bringing projects, knowledge, and requests into one open, adaptable platform. Plane is used by teams worldwide and supports deployments as a managed cloud service, on customer infrastructure, or in fully isolated environments. Plane is built for a future where **humans and AI agents work together** in one system of action—where an agent’s work is as visible and accountable as a person’s. ## About the Role (Software Engineer, Full Stack) Collaborative editing is the one feature where the client and the service can’t be reasoned about separately. You’ll own the problem end-to-end on both sides: - **React editing surfaces** - **Node services** that carry and persist document state You’ll work on scenarios like: - Network disappearing mid-sentence - Offline edits and reconciliation when the connection returns - Conflicts between two edits (or a human edit and an agent edit) You’ll collaborate with designers and backend engineers in **San Francisco** and **Hyderabad**, and engage with community contributors in public issue threads. ## What You’ll Do - Own **collaborative editing end to end**, from the React editor surface through the Node services that persist document state. - Own **offline behavior**: what the client keeps, what it queues while offline, and how it reconciles on reconnect—without requiring user effort. - Design the **realtime transport** and **conflict resolution**: decide which change wins when edits can’t both apply, and ensure the decision is recorded. - Build the **editing surfaces agents act through**, so automated changes show authorship and authority clearly. - Work daily with designers and backend engineers in San Francisco and Hyderabad; respond to community contributors in public threads. - Investigate and chase **data loss reports** you can’t reproduce locally—across networks, browsers, and self-hosted versions. ## What You’ll Bring - You’ve shipped **both React and Node in production** using **TypeScript**—not just one side. - You’ve worked inside a **rich-text editor framework** (e.g., ProseMirror, Lexical, Tiptap, or comparable) at the level of schema and document model. - You’ve built **realtime features over WebSockets**, including reconnection, ordering, and behavior when a client has been away. - You’ve built an application that works **offline** (Service Workers, IndexedDB, queued mutations, and a reconciliation strategy you can defend). - You’re comfortable with **Postgres beyond the ORM**—reading query plans, adding indexes, and explaining impact. ## Nice to Haves - Experience arguing about **CRDTs** and **operational transformation** from real work. - Contributed to Plane, run it self-hosted, or maintained another open project people rely on. - Built and shipped an **Electron** desktop application (packaging + updates). - Built systems where **AI agents act on real data**, with opinions on state, permissions, and audit trails. ## Tech **Frontend:** React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, MobX **Backend:** Node.js + TypeScript, Python/Django, Postgres, Redis **Editing & sync:** ProseMirror-based editor, WebSocket sync engine backed by Elixir, Service Workers, IndexedDB **Desktop:** Electron **Build:** Vite, Rolldown, shared React component library **Infrastructure:** AWS, Kubernetes **Observability:** Datadog, Sentry **Everyday tools:** GitHub, Plane, Figma, Slack ## Why Plane? Plane emphasizes evidenc
