**Software Engineer, AI accelerator Runtime** **About the Team** OpenAI's Hardware organization develops AI-native silicon and system-level solutions for advanced AI workloads, building on efforts like Jalapeño to create future generations of AI-native silicon and integrated systems. **About the Role** You will build the low-level device runtime that turns compiled programs into efficient, functional, and performant execution on OpenAI's custom AI accelerator. Work at the boundary of software and hardware, partnering with compiler, kernel, architecture, verification, and silicon teams. **Key Responsibilities** • Design and implement low-level device runtime for OpenAI custom silicon • Build kernel-launch scheduling, command submission, queueing, and dependency tracking • Manage device memory spaces, allocation, virtual-to-physical mappings, and data movement • Implement synchronization primitives, events, barriers, and ordering guarantees • Define clean interfaces between runtime, drivers, firmware, and higher-level systems • Use event-based, cycle-accurate simulators for development and validation • Diagnose concurrency, memory-ordering, and performance issues • Build tests, tracing, profiling, and observability tools • Partner with architecture teams on hardware-software interface improvements **Ideal Candidate** • Strong low-level systems programming (C, C++, Rust, or comparable) • Experience with runtimes, drivers, firmware, or accelerator software • Deep understanding of concurrency, synchronization, and memory management • Hands-on experience with cycle-accurate simulators • Ability to debug across software abstractions and hardware behavior • Effective collaboration across multiple technical teams **About OpenAI** An AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity.
