**Android Systems Engineer, Consumer Devices** **ABOUT THE TEAM** The Consumer Devices team is building a new generation of AI-native experiences that bring OpenAI's technology closer to people throughout their day. We explore how AI can become deeply integrated into devices people already use—understanding context, helping users accomplish tasks, coordinating across apps and services, and making use of device-specific capabilities. **ABOUT THE ROLE** As an Android Systems Engineer, you will help define and build the Android platform capabilities behind the next generation of AI-powered consumer experiences. This role spans the entire Android stack, using system-level APIs, device capabilities, platform integrations, and OEM-specific functionality to create experiences that would be difficult or impossible to build as a conventional mobile application. **KEY RESPONSIBILITIES** • Build deeply integrated Android experiences leveraging platform capabilities • Work across the Android framework, system APIs, and device-level functionality • Unlock device capabilities (audio, camera, sensors, connectivity, location, etc.) • Develop agentic systems that help users complete multi-step tasks across apps and services • Create scalable abstractions and reusable components for multiple Android devices and OEMs • Prototype new interaction models and explore emerging Android capabilities • Own experiences end-to-end from exploration through production • Ensure reliability, performance, and power efficiency across diverse Android devices • Design with privacy and security at the forefront • Partner across product, design, AI, backend, and platform teams **IDEAL CANDIDATE** • Deep experience building and shipping high-quality Android software • Strong knowledge of Android platform beyond UI (framework APIs, system services, IPC, permissions, background execution) • Highly proficient in Kotlin and/or Java • Experience with AOSP, Android framework internals, or OEM-specific integrations • Experience integrating software with hardware and device capabilities • Understands Android ecosystem realities (OS versions, fragmentation, power management) • Passionate about product quality and user experience • Thrives in ambiguous, rapidly changing environments • Takes ownership and drives work independently • Energized by 0→1 product development **LOCATION** San Francisco, CA (Hybrid: 4 days/week in office) *OpenAI is an equal opportunity employer.
