**Software Engineer, API Safety** **About the Role** Join OpenAI's API Safety team to design and build systems ensuring safe deployment of frontier models. You'll work on dashboards, APIs, and safeguards while balancing developer experience, latency, reliability, and risk. **Key Responsibilities** • Design and build dashboards and APIs for safety controls and observability • Develop scalable systems extending safety capabilities to new use cases and deployment environments • Partner with Safety Research and Integrity teams on safeguard development • Own availability, latency, and scalability of safeguards across high-volume API traffic • Lead projects from technical design through launch and iteration **Required Experience** • 7+ years professional backend, infrastructure, platform, or product engineering experience • Track record designing and operating production backend services, developer-facing APIs, or distributed systems • Strong fundamentals in software engineering and systems design • Proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, TypeScript, or similar backend languages • Experience building reliable, scalable systems with distributed architecture expertise • Product judgment and developer empathy • Clear communication and collaborative approach **Preferred Qualifications** • Experience with observability, abuse prevention, trust and safety, or security systems • Interest in responsible AI deployment at scale **About OpenAI** OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company ensuring general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity.
