**Software Engineer, API Enterprise Controls** **About the Team** API Enterprise Controls is part of the API Infrastructure organization and owns the platform capabilities that help developers, startups, and enterprises adopt the OpenAI API securely and confidently. We build systems for authentication, identity, service accounts, key management, secure networking, compliance, auditability, observability, and operational controls. **About the Role** We're seeking an exceptional backend software engineer to define and ship enterprise capabilities for our API Platform. This product-engineering role focuses on deep backend systems including databases, streaming systems, request routing, authentication, and developer-facing APIs. **Key Responsibilities** • Own backend product capabilities end-to-end across authentication, identity, service accounts, key controls, secure networking, compliance, observability, and operational workflows • Partner with Product, go-to-market, security, infrastructure teams, and customers to identify needs and lead cross-functional projects • Design developer-facing APIs with exceptional attention to detail, configuration, error handling, and auditing • Build, operate, and debug highly reliable backend systems with strong operational ownership **Required Background** • 9+ years of professional engineering experience in backend, platform, or product-driven roles • Exceptional backend engineering depth with strong product judgment • Experience leading large cross-functional initiatives • Proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, TypeScript, or similar languages • Experience with distributed systems, databases, streaming systems, authentication, or enterprise platform controls • Strong communication skills and developer empathy • Strong opinions about reliability, DevOps, and operational excellence **About OpenAI** OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
